A restoration shop doing seasonal storage swaps doesn’t always need the top-tier commercial two-post — sometimes a mid-tier asymmetric lift in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range covers everything from a Mustang to a long-bed pickup without overspending on capacity you’ll never use. Step Four: Symmetric vs. Asymmetric for Storage Rotation
For seasonal storage use specifically, asymmetric arm configurations usually win. If you’re rolling cars in and out multiple times a season rather than doing heavy repair work under them, the offset column design of an asymmetric two-post makes it easier to open doors and walk around the vehicle in a tight bay, which matters a lot in older Iowa City buildings where floor space is already tight. Symmetric lifts still have their place — better balance for certain drivetrain work — but for pure storage rotation, asymmetric is the more practical choice most of the time.
