Picking the right 2 post car lift matters most when your bread-and-butter work is transmission service, not just oil changes. We’ve talked with more than one independent shop owner around the Iowa Great Lakes region who called us thinking they just needed “a lift” — and ended up needing a real conversation about overhead versus baseplate configuration first. Ceiling height, transmission jack clearance, and how many vehicles roll through your bay in a day all change the answer. This isn’t a one-size question, and getting it wrong means fighting your own equipment every time you drop a transmission. Why Transmission Shops Ask This Question First

Transmission work is different from tire and brake work in one big way: you’re often working under the vehicle with a transmission jack, and you need real room to maneuver that jack in and out without banging it into an overhead beam. A shop we work with near Storm Lake runs almost exclusively transmission and driveline jobs, and the first thing we ask new customers in that line of work is what their ceiling height actually is — not what they think it is, but a real tape-measure number. Overhead configuration two post lifts put the crossbar up high, out of the way, which is great for full access around the vehicle but only works if you’ve genuinely got the clearance.

Baseplate configuration, on the other hand, ties the posts together at floor level with a plate connecting them. That means no overhead beam to duck under or bump a transmission jack into, but it also means there’s a plate running across your floor between the posts that you have to work around or drive over. For transmission techs who are constantly rolling jacks, creepers, and parts carts through the bay, that floor plate can become its own daily annoyance. There’s no universal right answer — it comes down to your ceiling, your floor, and how your crew actually moves around the vehicle once it’s in the air.

Overhead Configuration: The Case For It

An overhead 2 post car lift gives you a completely open floor. No plate to trip on, no plate to roll a jack over, nothing between the posts at ground level. For transmission service specifically, that open floor is a real advantage — you can position a transmission jack from any angle, roll tool carts underneath without lifting them over anything, and generally move faster from vehicle to vehicle. If you’re running a busy independent shop where techs are in and out of the bay constantly, that unobstructed floor pays for itself in efficiency over a few years.

The catch is ceiling height. Most overhead-configuration two post lifts need somewhere in the range of eleven to twelve feet of clearance to work with a full-size truck or van, and that number climbs if you’re running LED shop lighting fixtures hanging down from the rafters — something we get asked about constantly. We had a shop owner in the middle of a pole-building addition ask us directly whether his LED lighting would eat into his clearance before he even poured concrete. It absolutely can. If your building was built for storage rather than service, or you’ve got older rafters sitting right around eleven feet, overhead may simply be off the table no matter how much you’d prefer it.

Baseplate Configuration: The Case For It

Baseplate configuration exists for exactly the buildings where overhead doesn’t fit. If your shop has a lower ceiling, exposed HVAC ductwork, or you’re retrofitting a lift into a building that was never designed around a two post lift, baseplate is very often the only realistic option. The connecting plate at the base keeps the posts aligned without needing anything overhead, so you can install this configuration in buildings with far less vertical clearance than an overhead unit would ever tolerate.

For transmission work, the tradeoff is that floor plate. It’s not a dealbreaker — plenty of busy transmission shops run baseplate two post lifts every single day — but your techs need to get used to working around or over it with jacks and carts. We’ve installed baseplate configurations for shops doing heavy driveline work who simply adapted their workflow, angling the transmission jack in from the open side rather than straight through the plate. If your building has the ceiling height, we’ll usually steer you toward overhead. If it doesn’t, baseplate isn’t a compromise — it’s just the correct choice for that building, and a well-installed one will hold up to years of transmission work without issue.

Reading Your Building Before You Buy

Before we ever quote a 2 post car lift, we ask about ceiling clearance, concrete thickness, and slab age — because all three determine which configuration is even possible, let alone which one is best. A rough tape measure isn’t good enough for this decision. We regularly have someone come out to a shop, lay out where the posts would actually sit, and in some cases test the concrete depth itself before recommending overhead or baseplate. Concrete that’s thinner than four inches or lacking proper rebar can rule out anchoring a heavier lift altogether, regardless of which configuration you’d prefer.

We’ve seen this play out with pole-building additions around the Iowa Great Lakes region, where an owner is pouring five-inch concrete with rebar specifically to prepare for a lift, and wants to know exactly where the posts will land before the concrete truck shows up. That’s the right way to do it. Getting post placement, front-wall distance, and side-wall clearance nailed down before the pour saves you from cutting into finished concrete later, and it lets us confirm your ceiling height actually supports overhead before you commit to it over baseplate.

Capacity Still Comes Before Configuration

Configuration matters, but it doesn’t override capacity. Most independent shops doing transmission service on trucks, SUVs, and full-size vans need at least a 9,000 to 10,000 lb rated 2 post car lift, and shops that also handle heavier work occasionally spec up into the 12,000 to 15,000 lb range. We’ve quoted everything from 7,000 lb Rotary units up through 15,000 and 18,000 lb Challenger models for shops that needed to cover a wider range of vehicles, and the capacity conversation always happens before we finalize overhead versus baseplate.

It’s worth remembering that a used 2 post car lift, even one that’s twenty-plus years old, can still be a perfectly solid choice in either configuration if it’s been maintained and the specs match your vehicle mix. The lesson is the same whether it’s new or used: confirm capacity and configuration together, not one before the other.

What Installation and Moving Actually Looks Like

Once you’ve settled on overhead or baseplate, installation logistics are where a lot of shop owners get surprised. We ask upfront whether there’s a forklift on site, what the delivery access looks like, and whether you’re installing fresh or relocating an existing lift from another building. We’ve handled jobs where two working 9,000 to 10,000 lb two post lifts needed to be disassembled at one shop and reassembled next door, and jobs where a lift had to be moved across town on a tight deadline because a lease was ending.

Freight and scheduling both factor in too. Depending on brand and configuration, lead time on a new lift can run several weeks, so if you’re timing an install around a building addition or a lease transition, we want to know that date early. We also handle the small stuff during install — anchoring correctly into new or existing concrete, checking chain and cable alignment on baseplate units, and making sure the arms clear whatever vehicle you’re actually going to run across it most often, whether that’s a half-ton pickup or a minivan in for a transmission rebuild.

There isn’t a universally correct configuration for a 2 post car lift — there’s only the correct configuration for your building, your ceiling, your concrete, and the kind of transmission work you actually do.
