Most techs don’t think about lift cables while they’re fighting a stuck half-shaft, but every twist of a breaker bar transfers load through the arms, into the carriage, and onto the cable and pulley system that keeps both columns synchronized. A 2 post car lift relies on that cable to make sure the driver’s side and passenger’s side rise and lock together. When you’re pulling a CV axle, you’re often working with the vehicle at full height, arms extended asymmetrically, and a good amount of side-load on one column while you brace and pull. That’s a different stress profile than a straight oil change lift where the load stays centered and static.

Over months of that kind of use, we see fraying start at the same spots every time: near the pulley wraps and at the swage fitting where the cable terminates. We tell customers to run a gloved hand down the full length of exposed cable, not just glance at it, because broken strands under the outer wrap can hide inside the lay of the cable.

Equalizer cable length varies by model — a Rotary SPOA9 series two post typically runs a different length than a Challenger CL10, so replacement cable is not universal even within the same weight class. That’s why we always ask for the model and serial number, not just “it’s a 9K two post,” before we quote a cable kit. It’s a subtle thing, but techs who’ve worked the same lift for years usually notice it before they can explain why.
