Why ALI Gold Certification Matters for a Family Shop

ALI Gold certification isn’t just a sticker on the column. It’s a third-party verification that the lift meets the ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standard, and for a shop doing state inspections, that certification is often the difference between a smooth annual review and a shutdown notice. We’ve seen multi-generation shops in Cedar Falls and the surrounding Cedar Valley get caught off guard because grandpa’s old lift, purchased decades ago, was never re-certified after a cylinder rebuild or an arm swap. Any time you change a load-bearing component on a 2 post car lift, the certification chain matters.

Rise on most models lands between 68 and 74 inches, with lifting height enough to clear a full-size truck for undercarriage work during an inspection. Runway width, meaning the space between the columns, typically sits at 100 to 104 inches on standard models, which matters when you’re trying to fit a dually or an extended cab into the bay.

For a shop doing high volumes of state inspections, arm reach is the number that decides whether the lift actually works for the fleet coming through the door. Short arms on a budget two post lift might only reach 42 inches, which won’t safely pick up a longer wheelbase pickup at the correct lift points. We spec Rotary and Challenger models with arms that extend past 47 inches on the long side specifically because Iowa shops see everything from compact sedans to one-ton service trucks in the same week.

Concrete, Anchoring, and What Inspectors Check First

Before we even talk about the lift itself, an inspector wants to know the concrete underneath it is rated for the anchor bolts specified by the manufacturer.
