There isn’t a single right answer, but there is a decision tree that actually works, and it starts with being honest about your budget, your ceiling height, and what you’re actually going to be doing under that car.

Start With What the Car Actually Needs

For restoration and exhaust work, the whole point of a 2 post car lift is open underbody access — no crossmember, no rails, nothing between you and the car from bumper to bumper. That’s why almost every shop doing exhaust and driveline work chooses a two-post over a four-post drive-on: a four-post has ramps and runways running the length of the car, and that gets in the way exactly where you need to be working. If you’re pulling driveshafts, dropping transmissions, or fabricating exhaust on classics and muscle cars, the open-bay design of a two-post is not optional, it’s the reason you’re buying one in the first place.

We also ask what else the lift needs to handle. A shop that’s doing light exhaust work on unibody cars has different arm and adapter needs than one swapping full frames on trucks. Asymmetric arm geometry matters here — it lets the door swing clear and keeps weight balanced correctly under the car’s factory lift points. Get this wrong and you’re fighting the lift every time you load a vehicle, which slows down exactly the kind of detailed underbody work restoration shops live on.

The Budget Fork: Used 2 Post Car Lift or New

This is where the decision tree really starts. We’ve quoted plenty of restoration and repair shops on used lifts — we had a call recently about installing a used 10,000 lb two-post Wheeltronic unit, cylinders and all, at a Waukee address, and that’s a completely reasonable path if the unit has a clean service history and the cylinders haven’t been sitting dry. Used equipment can cut a meaningful chunk off your upfront cost, and for a startup restoration shop watching every dollar, that matters.

But used comes with real risk. You’re inheriting someone else’s wear pattern on the cables, the arm pins, the locks, and the hydraulic seals, and you often don’t get a warranty. New equipment, on the other hand, comes with a documented service life ahead of it, current safety certifications, and a warranty that actually means something if a cylinder starts leaking in year one. Our rule of thumb: if a used 2 post car lift is priced low enough that a full cable and seal service pays for itself within the first year of ownership, it’s worth considering. If the used unit is priced close to new, buy new.

Configuration Decision: Baseplate vs In-Ground

Once budget is settled, configuration is next. Baseplate two-post lifts sit on top of the slab, anchor into the concrete, and don’t require excavation — that’s the option we quote most often for shops that want to get up and running fast. Concrete, Ceiling Height, and Site Readiness

Before we ever price a 2 post car lift, we ask the same handful of logistics questions every time: how thick is the concrete, is there rebar in it, is there infloor heat, and what’s your ceiling height. A typical two-post baseplate install wants at least a good six inches of structurally sound concrete without infloor heat running through the anchor zones — infloor heat lines complicate anchoring and sometimes rule out a location entirely. Ceiling height matters just as much; a shop with a low ceiling may be limited on which model and arm configuration will actually clear a raised vehicle.

We also ask about site access — is there a forklift on site, is there a loading dock or just a garage door, because a two-post lift’s columns and crossbeam are heavy and awkward, and how they get from the truck to the install bay changes our crew’s plan and the timeline we quote you. None of this is complicated, but skipping it is the single biggest reason installs get delayed or re-quoted.

Brand and Capacity: Matching the Lift to the Work

What New Actually Buys You Long-Term

A new 2 post car lift comes with fresh cables, fresh cylinders, current lock mechanisms, and a manufacturer warranty that covers early failures. We service lifts for dealerships and repair shops across the state that are still running units installed years ago, and the ones that get regular inspections and started life as new equipment tend to have far fewer surprise breakdowns than units that started life already worn.

That said, new isn’t always the financially smart move for every shop. A restoration business just getting its bays filled with paying work might reasonably start with a well-vetted used lift and reinvest in new equipment once revenue is established. The decision tree isn’t about which option is universally better — it’s about matching the choice to where your shop actually is right now.

Service Life: What Keeps Either Choice Running

Whether you land on used or new, the lift’s lifespan comes down to maintenance after the sale. We run full inspections on two-post fleets regularly — checking cable tension, lock engagement, arm pin wear, and hydraulic integrity — because a lift that’s inspected annually and serviced when something looks off will run for well over a decade regardless of whether it started life used or new. We’ve seen shops with eight lifts on one property request full fleet inspections just to make sure cables and locks are still solid, and that kind of proactive check is what actually protects your investment, not the sticker on the day you bought it.

If you’re leaning used, budget for an immediate inspection and likely cable or seal service before it ever lifts a car in your bay. If you’re leaning new, don’t skip the first-year inspection just because everything feels solid — catching a minor issue early is always cheaper than an emergency repair mid-project.
