Why Concrete Thickness Matters More Than the Lift Spec Sheet

A 4-post storage lift spreads its load across four footprints, but the actual pressure at each post base is still concentrated enough that thin or cracked concrete will heave, crack further, or let anchors pull loose over time. We tell every farm shop owner the same thing: the lift’s weight rating on paper doesn’t matter if the floor under it can’t hold the anchor bolts. Most manufacturers want a minimum of 4 inches of concrete for a lighter-duty 4-post storage lift, but if you’re running anything in the 10,000 lb or higher range — which is common for shops that also lift trucks or equipment — 6 inches is a much safer target.

We’ve had customers tell us their slab is “at least 4 inches, maybe up to 6,” and that uncertainty is exactly why we ask before we load a truck. Rebar: Helpful, But Not a Substitute for Thickness

But rebar alone doesn’t fix a slab that’s too thin. When we scope a job, we ask directly: is there rebar in the pour, and roughly how deep is it set? If you don’t know, that’s fine — plenty of shop owners don’t, especially on older buildings where the original contractor’s paperwork is long gone. We can usually tell a lot just by looking at the edge of the slab or drilling a small test hole in an inconspicuous spot. The goal isn’t to fail your floor before we’ve even started; it’s to make sure the anchors we set will actually hold under years of raising and lowering trucks for tire and brake work.

What a Pre-Purchase Slab Check Actually Looks Like

Before we finalize an order for a 4-post storage lift, we walk through a short list with the customer: slab thickness, presence and depth of rebar, age and condition of the concrete, any visible cracking, and whether the floor is level within a reasonable tolerance across the footprint. We also ask about ceiling height, since farm shops often have taller doors but lower interior clearance near trusses or lighting, and a 4-post unit with a vehicle on top needs real headroom.

We also ask logistics questions that surprise some first-time buyers: do you have a forklift on site to help unload, is there a loading dock or just a flat approach, and how much lead time do you need before delivery. None of this is about making the sale harder — it’s about avoiding a situation where a lift shows up on a truck and there’s nowhere ready to put it, or worse, the slab fails inspection after the fact. A five-minute phone conversation up front is a lot cheaper than jackhammering out bad concrete after the anchors are already set.

Common Slab Problems We Find in Older Farm Shops

The most common issue we run into with older Iowa farm buildings is a slab that was poured in sections over the years, meaning the area where the lift needs to sit might straddle two different pours with different thicknesses. Another frequent problem is a slab that looks fine on the surface but has a void or settling issue underneath from years of frost heave, which is a real concern with Iowa winters. We’ve also found slabs poured directly over old gravel pads without enough compaction, which can shift slightly under repeated load cycles.

We’ll give you a realistic ETA up front rather than a vague estimate, and we’ll ask the same logistics questions every time: do you have a forklift or equipment to help unload, is there a clear path from the delivery point to the install location, and is the concrete work already done or does it need time to cure first. If you need a new pad poured, plan for standard cure time before we can anchor into it — rushing that step defeats the purpose of doing the concrete work right in the first place.
