The problem: almost everything he’d been told about the power requirements was wrong. That’s common. Myth #1: You need three-phase power for a storage lift

This is the single biggest misconception we hear, and it costs shop owners real money because three-phase service upgrades in older Quad Cities commercial buildings aren’t cheap. A 4-post storage lift, whether it’s a BendPak or an Atlas model built for home or light-commercial use, almost always runs on standard single-phase 220-240V power. The hydraulic power unit that raises the columns is not a heavy industrial motor pulling the kind of load that demands three-phase. We’ve installed these units in strip-mall bays, converted garages, and light industrial spaces with nothing more than a dedicated 220V circuit already common in shops that run welders or compressors.

Where three-phase actually matters is on much larger in-ground or heavy-duty commercial equipment, not a 4-post storage lift meant for oil changes and general fluid service. If your electrician quotes a three-phase panel upgrade for a basic storage lift, get a second opinion. We’d rather tell an EV shop owner to save that money for diagnostic tooling than watch it get burned on a phase conversion the lift doesn’t need.

Myth #2: Any 220V outlet in the shop will work

The flip side of the three-phase myth is assuming any existing 220V outlet is good enough. It’s not, and this is where EV shops trip themselves up because their bays are often wired for battery charging stations, not lift power units. A 4-post storage lift needs a dedicated circuit sized to the power unit’s amperage draw, with the right breaker rating and wire gauge run directly from the panel. Sharing a circuit with a charging station, air compressor, or welder invites nuisance trips right when you’re mid-lift with a vehicle in the air, which is not where you want an electrical surprise.

We always tell customers to get the lift’s electrical spec sheet to their electrician before the panel work starts, not after. Motor horsepower, voltage, and amperage vary a little between manufacturers even within the same weight class. On a job we quoted for a home storage 4-post unit with a 10,000 lb capacity, the customer’s electrician ran the circuit before confirming specs and had to redo it once the correct amp draw came back. A five-minute call to us upfront would have avoided that second trip.

Myth #3: The power unit has to be permanently hardwired

Some installers assume every 4-post storage lift has to be hardwired directly into the panel with no disconnect. In most residential and light-commercial installs, a properly rated plug and receptacle setup is perfectly acceptable and actually makes future service easier. If we ever need to service the power unit, swap a switch, or troubleshoot the motor, having a disconnect or plug makes the job faster and safer than working live on a hardwired junction. Local code always governs the final call, and Quad Cities jurisdictions can vary slightly, so we tell shop owners to loop in their electrician on this specific point rather than assume either way.

This matters more for EV shops than most, because these bays already have enough hardwired charging infrastructure running through the walls. Adding unnecessary permanent wiring for a storage lift when a code-compliant disconnect setup would work just as well only adds complexity to a space that’s already busy with high-voltage EV service equipment nearby.

Myth #4: Storage lifts and EV charging equipment can share breaker space freely

EV specialty shops have unique electrical loads that traditional shops don’t carry, and this is where we see the most confusion. Level 2 chargers and lift power units both want dedicated circuits, and cramming both onto a panel that wasn’t sized for the total load is asking for tripped breakers during peak shop hours. Before we quote a 4-post storage lift for an EV shop, we ask what other equipment is running in that bay and what the panel’s total capacity looks like. It’s a conversation worth having with your electrician before, not after, the lift shows up on a truck.

We’ve seen shops try to squeeze a storage lift onto a panel that was maxed out by charging stations, diagnostic equipment, and shop lighting. The fix is almost always a subpanel or a dedicated feeder, and it’s far cheaper to plan that during construction than to retrofit it after the concrete’s poured and the lift is already up.

Myth #5: Bigger capacity always means bigger power needs

People assume a 14,000 lb 4-post storage lift needs dramatically more power than a 10,000 lb unit. In reality, capacity is mostly about the mechanical structure, columns, cables, and hydraulic cylinder sizing, not a linear jump in electrical draw. Many mid-range storage lifts in the 9,000 to 14,000 lb range use similar single-phase power units with only modest differences in motor size. Don’t let a bigger-capacity lift scare you into over-building your electrical service before you’ve confirmed the actual spec sheet numbers.

We’d rather run the numbers with you directly than have you guess. It’s a quick conversation and it prevents both under-building and over-spending on the electrical side.

What ceiling height and concrete have to do with the install, too

Electrical isn’t the only thing people get wrong before a 4-post storage lift install. Ceiling height, ceiling clearance for the vehicle plus lift height, and concrete thickness all matter just as much as the wiring. We’ve had customers ready to purchase a unit before confirming their slab was even thick enough, only to find out mid-quote that 4 inches of concrete with rebar is the minimum for most storage lift anchoring, and older Quad Cities buildings sometimes fall short. Forklift access on delivery day matters too, since a 4-post unit arrives heavy and in sections that need to get from the truck to the bay.

We walk through all of this during the quoting process so nothing surprises you on install day, whether it’s an EV shop or a home garage. Getting the electrical, the concrete, and the clearance right before the lift arrives saves everyone a second trip and a second invoice.
