This is what a lot of larger tire and service chains run, because it lets techs work on two vehicles at once — one on the two-post for a brake job, another on the rack getting aligned — without either job blocking the other.

For a smaller fleet operation, though, this configuration usually costs more up front once you add the second footprint, the second install, and a separate rolling jack or slip plate setup. It also means training staff on two different pieces of equipment instead of one. On resale, a two-post plus a standalone rack can actually appraise higher in total dollar value on paper, but it’s harder to sell as a package — most buyers of a small shop want either both pieces or neither, and splitting the sale slows things down. We told this customer plainly: if space and budget allow it, this setup gives more flexibility, but it’s not the simpler answer.

Trade-In and Resale: What Actually Moves the Needle

We get asked about trade-in value more than people might expect, especially from small fleet operators who know they might sell the business or the equipment down the road. The biggest factor isn’t brand loyalty — it’s documentation and condition. A lift with a clean install record, consistent annual inspections, and no jury-rigged parts holds value far better than an identical model with a spotty service history. We’ve seen this play out directly: shops that kept up with inspections on schedule get faster, cleaner offers when they sell, while shops that skipped years of service end up negotiating hard just to move the equipment at all.

Alignment capability itself adds real dollars to a resale quote because it expands the pool of buyers. A straight two-post service lift only appeals to shops that don’t need alignment. A four-post alignment setup appeals to service shops, tire shops, and fleet operators alike. When we quote inspections ahead of a sale or trade-in, we’re specifically checking anchor bolts, lock mechanisms, cylinder condition, and cable wear, because those are the line items that make or break a buyer’s confidence before they hand over money for used equipment.

Concrete, Ceiling Height, and Freight Realities

Before any auto lifts installed conversation goes further than a phone call, we need real numbers on the bay: slab thickness, ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, door clearance, and whether there’s a pit already in place or if this is a fresh above-ground install. Four-post alignment lifts generally need a bit more overhead clearance than a comparable two-post because of the runway height plus the vehicle sitting on top of it. If the bay has low ductwork or a garage door track running close to where the lift needs to go, that changes which configuration actually fits.

We also ask the same logistics questions every time: is there a forklift on site to help unload, what’s the loading dock or door situation for freight, and how much lead time does the customer need before the crew shows up. Most alignment-ready four-post lifts ship on a truck that needs either a dock or a forklift to unload safely, and if neither is available, we plan around that with our own equipment. Getting these details nailed down before the truck arrives is what keeps an install on schedule instead of turning into a half-day of logistics problem-solving in the parking lot.

What We Actually Recommended

For this specific fleet operator, we recommended the four-post alignment configuration. Their bay had enough ceiling height, the slab was in good shape from a previous equipment run, and their volume of alignment work didn’t justify running two separate pieces of equipment yet. Getting a single alignment-capable four-post installed let them bring that revenue in-house immediately without doubling the footprint of their small bay. If their volume grows significantly, adding a second two-post purely for general service down the line is still an easy expansion.
