Wheel bearing work means pulling wheels off, sometimes with the vehicle loaded unevenly while a tech works one corner at a time, and that asymmetric load matters more on a heavier truck than most owners expect. We’ve quoted 12K two-post units for shops in this exact situation, and the lift cost itself is usually the smallest variable in the whole project once you factor in everything else.

Brand matters here too. We sell and install Rotary and Challenger commercial lifts, and for a shop running trucks all day, we lean toward the heavier-duty columns and thicker cross-tubes in that product line rather than a lighter-duty unit that technically meets the weight rating on paper but wasn’t built for daily truck use. For a rural southern Minnesota shop, that gravel-drive scenario is common, and it’s fine — we’ve pulled onto plenty of gravel entrances with red gates and no paved approach. What we need ahead of time is an accurate description of the access, because showing up with the wrong equipment on install day costs everyone time. We’ve had jobs scheduled with a backup day built in specifically because the site logistics weren’t fully known ahead of time, and that backup day saved the schedule.

Line Item Three: Concrete Slab Thickness

This is the part that trips up more truck shop owners than anything else, and it’s the reason we ask about slab specs before we ever talk install date. A 12K to 18K two-post lift puts real point-loading on four anchor bolt clusters, and older truck shop slabs — especially ones poured decades ago for a lighter-duty operation — often don’t meet the thickness or PSI rating the lift manufacturer requires. Most commercial two-post lifts in this capacity range call for a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 PSI or better, with no rebar or wire mesh sitting where the anchor bolts need to go.

That last part surprises people. Rebar isn’t automatically a problem, but rebar sitting directly in an anchor bolt path is, because you can’t drill through it safely and you can’t just shift the anchor pattern on a fixed lift base. Before we schedule auto lifts installed at any shop with an older slab, we walk through slab age, known thickness if it’s documented, and whether the shop has any record of what’s under the surface. If there’s real doubt, a core sample or a new 6-inch reinforced pad poured specifically for the lift footprint is cheaper in the long run than anchors that won’t hold and a lift that walks under load.

Line Item Four: Electrical and Hydraulic Prep

Most two-post and four-post lifts need dedicated power run to the install location, and this is a cost that belongs to the shop’s electrician, not to us, but it has to happen before we show up. We’ve had install days go smoothly because the customer had their electrician run power to spec straight out of the manufacturer’s install manual ahead of time — no guessing, no delay. We’ve also had jobs where power wasn’t ready and we had to reschedule, which nobody likes.

Hydraulic hose runs are usually simpler and we handle those as part of the install itself, but if you’re replacing an old lift with a new one in the same bay, expect us to ask whether the old unit needs to be removed first, since that’s its own line item on some quotes. Additional charges also apply if the lift isn’t already on site when we arrive, or if it’s staged in a different building than where it’s getting installed — moving a two-post lift base across a yard isn’t a five-minute job.

Line Item Five: Labor and Install Time

A straightforward two-post install on a prepped, correct-thickness slab with power already run typically runs one to two days for our crew, depending on whether it’s a single lift or multiple bays. We’ve done installs where we scheduled a shop for two days and built in a third as a buffer in case something ran long — that’s standard practice for us, especially on a first visit to a new site where we don’t have history with the building.

Multi-lift jobs, like installing a four-post while relocating an existing two-post in the same shop, take longer and cost more in labor, but the per-lift efficiency usually improves once we’re already on site with tools staged and power confirmed. This is one reason it often makes financial sense for a growing truck shop to install two bays at once rather than one now and one later — the mobilization cost gets spread across more lifts.

Line Item Six: What Wheel Bearing Work Specifically Demands

Wheel bearing service on heavy trucks is hard on a lift in ways brake jobs and oil changes aren’t. Techs are working with impact tools at height, sometimes with a wheel and hub assembly hanging off one arm while the tech works, and that uneven, repetitive stress is exactly why we push shops toward commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger units rated well above what the heaviest truck on the lot weighs, not lifts rated right at the edge. A margin of a few thousand pounds above your heaviest vehicle isn’t overkill — it’s what keeps the lift’s arms, locks, and cables from wearing out in eighteen months instead of fifteen years.

We also recommend two-post configurations with adjustable arm reach specifically because truck frames and pickup frames have different lift points than passenger cars, and a shop doing mixed wheel bearing work across both vehicle types needs that flexibility built in from day one rather than fighting short arms later.
