When a vehicle collector up near the Iowa Great Lakes region called us about getting auto lifts installed in his new storage building, the first question wasn’t about lift brands or arm styles. It was about the concrete. He’d already poured a slab for a pole building meant to house a handful of project cars, and he wanted to know if it could actually carry a two-post lift before he bought one. That conversation turned into a full first-year story we think is worth telling, because it covers almost everything a collector needs to know before signing off on a lift install: slab prep, scheduling, and what happens when you finally get under a car for real service work like a differential fluid change.

Why the Slab Conversation Came First

Before we ever talk lift models with a collector, we talk concrete. A lot of pole buildings and detached garages around the lakes region get poured with a 4-inch slab because that’s what’s needed for parking and light storage. That thickness is not enough for a two-post lift carrying a loaded vehicle on four contact points. We generally want to see 4 inches of properly cured, unreinforced or lightly reinforced concrete rated at a reasonable compressive strength directly under each column footprint, and we always ask about rebar or wire mesh placement before we commit to an install date.

In this collector’s case, the original pour was thinner than ideal in one corner where a support beam ran close to the surface. Rather than guess, we cored a spot and checked it against the anchor bolt pattern for the lift he wanted. We ended up recommending he pour a supplemental pad section for the two rear columns rather than anchor into questionable concrete. It cost him a delay, but it’s cheaper than a failed anchor pull test after auto lifts installed on soft concrete start seeing real load. If you’re planning ahead of a build, tell your contractor now that a lift is coming — it changes the slab spec.

Scheduling the Auto Lifts Installed Around His Timeline

Once the slab was solid, scheduling was straightforward. Collectors tend to have more flexibility than a working shop, which actually makes install day easier for us. We didn’t have to work around service bays or a shop that needed to stay open. We asked the same logistics questions we ask everyone: is there a forklift or loading dock on site, is the building heated, and is there enough clear ceiling height for the lift fully raised with a vehicle on it.

We settled on a date about two weeks out, which let freight catch up and gave him time to finish the electrical run to the power unit location. On install day we had two of our own guys on site rather than relying on his equipment, since most collector buildings don’t have a forklift sitting around. We got the two-post set, leveled, and cabled in about half a day, then walked him through the safety locks, the arm restraints, and the lubrication points before we left. That’s standard for every auto lifts installed job we do, but it matters more with a collector who may not have run commercial shop equipment before.

Choosing Between Two-Post and Four-Post for a Collector’s Building

This particular building ended up with one two-post lift for active service work, plus room reserved for a four-post storage lift down the road. That’s a common pattern with the collectors we work with in this part of the state. A two-post gives full wheel-off access for brake work, suspension, and fluid services. A four-post is better suited to pure storage, letting him stack a second vehicle underneath without needing wheel access at all.

We talked through drive-on ramps versus adjustable arms, and for a garage with a rotating lineup of project cars, adjustable arms on the two-post won out because they adapt to different wheelbases and pinch weld locations. If storage density becomes the priority later, we’ll likely quote a four-post next. Either way, the decision came down to what he actually does in the building day to day, not just what looked impressive. We see collectors overbuy capacity and underbuy usability more often than the reverse.

The First Real Job: A Differential Fluid Service

The real test of any home or collector lift install comes the first time you actually use it for hands-on work, and for him that was a differential fluid service on one of his older project cars. Draining and refilling a differential sounds simple on paper, but it’s a job that benefits enormously from a level lift at the right working height, with both rear wheels hanging free and the vehicle stable enough to work a stubborn fill plug without rocking the car.

He called us a few weeks after the auto lifts installed date just to report how it went, which we appreciate — most of our best feedback comes after the fact, not during the sale. He’d set the lift at a comfortable standing height, had a drain pan positioned under the diff cover, and didn’t have to fight wheel chocks or a jack stand shifting mid-job like he used to in his old two-car garage. That’s the whole point of getting a proper lift into a collector building: not just storage, but the ability to actually maintain the cars you’re storing.

What We Check on an Iowa Great Lakes Install That Others Skip

The lakes region sees humidity swings and temperature extremes that most people don’t think about when planning a lift install. Buildings that aren’t fully conditioned can see condensation on cylinders and columns, especially in spring and fall. We make a point of checking anchor bolt torque again after the first few weeks in unheated or semi-heated buildings, because concrete cure and thermal cycling can affect that initial torque spec more than people expect.

We also look hard at floor drainage and slope near the lift footprint. A lot of pole buildings slope slightly toward a door for wash-down purposes, and if that slope runs under the lift columns it can throw off leveling over time. On this job we shimmed one column slightly to compensate and noted it for the next inspection visit. None of this is exotic work, but it’s the kind of detail that separates a lift that stays trouble-free for a decade from one that starts drifting out of adjustment within a year or two.

Cable and Cylinder Checks After Year One

A year in, we went back out to do exactly what we do for most of our long-term two-post customers: inspect the cables, check for fraying or uneven wear, and adjust equalization if needed. We’ve done this same kind of visit for shops running five or six lifts at once, where we replace cables on one unit and inspect the rest while we’re there. For a single collector lift, the visit is shorter, but the checklist doesn’t change — cable tension, pulley condition, cylinder seals, and the locking mechanism all get a look.

On his lift specifically, everything was within spec, which isn’t surprising given light collector use compared to a daily-driver shop environment. But we still recommend the annual check even for low-use auto lifts installed in a private building, because a cable that looks fine can hide wear where it rides over a pulley. Catching that early is a lot cheaper than a cable failure with a car in the air, and it’s part of why we build these check-ins into every install we do, not just the commercial accounts.

What We’d Tell Any Collector Planning a Lift Install

If you’re planning something similar anywhere in the Iowa Great Lakes region, start the slab conversation before the concrete truck shows up, not after. Rebar placement, slab thickness, and cure time all matter more than most people assume, and it’s far cheaper to fix on paper than to core-drill and patch later. Second, be honest with yourself about whether you need full wheel-off access for service work or whether you’re really just after storage density — that decision drives whether a two-post or four-post makes more sense for your building.

Finally, budget for the follow-up visits. Getting auto lifts installed correctly on day one is most of the job, but the annual cable and cylinder checks are what keep that lift safe and accurate for years of differential services, brake jobs, and everything else a serious collector eventually needs to do under their own cars. We’d rather do a quick inspection every year than a major repair every five.
