We’ve walked into more than one restoration bay in the Iowa Great Lakes region, tape measure in hand, only to find the customer already has the lift picked out and paid for before anyone checked what’s under the floor. As a body shop foreman or shop owner doing metal work and frame-up restorations, you already know a car sitting six feet in the air on a bad slab is a liability, not an upgrade. Before auto lifts installed at your shop actually go in the ground, the concrete underneath has to be right — thickness, rebar or mesh, and cure age all matter more than which brand badge is on the lift.

Why Slab Thickness Comes First on Any Auto Lift Installation

Every two-post or four-post lift anchors into concrete, and the concrete is doing all the real work of holding a raised vehicle in place. When we quote auto lifts installed for a restoration shop, the first question isn’t the lift model — it’s how thick the pad is where the columns will sit. Most manufacturers, whether it’s Rotary or Challenger, spec a minimum of four inches of properly cured concrete for a standard-duty two-post, and that number climbs for heavier four-post or alignment-rated lifts carrying full-frame trucks or vintage iron.

We’ve seen shops around the Iowa Great Lakes region build additions or convert pole barns into bays without ever pouring to lift spec, assuming any slab will do. It won’t. Thin, undersized, or non-reinforced concrete can crack around the anchor bolts under load, and that’s not a warranty claim — that’s a safety failure waiting to happen. Before we schedule installation, we ask for the slab age, thickness if known, and whether there’s rebar or wire mesh in it. If nobody knows, we bring a rebar scanner and a core bit to check before a single anchor goes in.

Rebar, Mesh, and Why It Changes the Anchor Plan

Rebar and wire mesh aren’t interchangeable when it comes to lift anchoring. Heavy rebar grids give real tensile strength and let us place anchors with more confidence near the mat’s edge; thin wire mesh mainly controls surface cracking and doesn’t add much holding power for a loaded column. On several restoration bay installs we’ve handled, we’ve had to shift anchor bolt patterns six to eight inches from the manufacturer’s stock template specifically to avoid cutting into a rebar grid or landing an anchor too close to a slab edge or expansion joint.

This is one of those details that never shows up in a sales brochure but shows up fast during install day. If your slab was poured with rebar on two-foot centers, we can usually work around it. If it’s an old thin pour with no reinforcement at all, we may recommend a partial saw-cut and repour under the lift footprint before auto lifts installed at that location will pass a real safety inspection. It costs more up front, but it’s cheaper than a lift that walks or an anchor that pulls loose under a heavy frame job two years down the road.

What Restoration and Metal Work Bays Load Differently

Restoration work isn’t like a quick-lube bay. You’ve got vehicles up on the lift for days or weeks at a time, sometimes with the body off the frame, sometimes with a torch running underneath. That changes what we recommend for both slab prep and lift type. A four-post lift with a rolling jack and stands underneath handles long-term frame and metal work better than a two-post in many restoration bays, simply because the load stays distributed and static rather than pinched at four contact points for weeks.

We’ve installed both configurations for shops doing this kind of work across the Iowa Great Lakes region, and the honest answer is it depends on your floor plan and vehicle mix. If you’re doing unibody collision repair with a rolling bridge system, a two-post with the right adapters may be all you need. If you’re doing frame-off restorations on classic trucks or full metal replacement, the extra footprint of a four-post pays for itself in how long the vehicle can safely sit elevated without tying up floor space or stressing the slab in one small zone.

Delivery, Forklifts, and Getting the Lift Into the Bay

Concrete isn’t the only logistics question. Before we schedule any auto lifts installed job, we ask if there’s a forklift on site, because a bare lift crate can weigh well over a thousand pounds and most shops don’t have a way to move that off a flatbed by hand. We’ve had installs delayed because a lift shipped straight to a customer with no forklift available, and we’ve had others where the lift got shipped to our shop first so we could bring it out ourselves on install day, fully assembled and staged.

We also confirm bay clearance, ceiling height for the columns, and door width before the truck ever leaves the warehouse. A four-post or alignment lift is a different shipping and staging problem than a mid-rise or scissor unit, and getting that wrong means a lift sitting on a trailer in your parking lot while everyone scrambles for a rental forklift. We’d rather ask the annoying questions up front than show up to a bay that can’t physically take delivery.

Anchor Bolt Torque and Why We Re-Check It

Anchoring is where slab prep and installation meet. Every anchor bolt has a torque spec, and every spec assumes the concrete underneath is at full cure strength — typically 28 days for a fresh pour, sometimes longer in cold Iowa winters when curing slows down. We won’t torque anchors to full spec into concrete that hasn’t cured, and we tell customers that up front even if it means pushing the install date.

Once anchors are set and torqued, we don’t just walk away. Part of a proper auto lifts installed job includes a return check on bolt torque after the lift has been used under real load for a few weeks, because concrete and anchors settle. We’ve caught loose anchors on inspections at shops that installed lifts themselves or through a bargain out-of-state installer who skipped that follow-up step entirely.

Picking the Right Lift Model for a Restoration Bay

Once the slab question is settled, model selection gets a lot simpler. For heavier restoration and metal work, we lean toward Challenger’s commercial two-post and four-post lines or Rotary’s heavy-duty models, both built to handle the extended dwell time and uneven load distribution that comes with frame work, panel replacement, and long-term project vehicles. A symmetric two-post gives easier door swing clearance in a tight bay, while an asymmetric design shifts weight for better technician access underneath.

We walk every restoration shop through this decision based on vehicle mix, not just budget. A shop mostly doing muscle car and classic truck restorations has different frame geometry to account for than one doing modern unibody collision work, and that changes which adapters and lift capacity actually make sense before we get to concrete and anchoring at all.

Scheduling Your Install Around Real Iowa Lead Times

Lead times for auto lifts installed at a restoration shop aren’t just about our install calendar — they’re about freight schedules, manufacturer backorders, and whether concrete work needs to happen first. We’ve had installs where the lift itself sat ready to go for weeks while a shop finished a slab pour and waited out the cure time, and others where the lift was the delay because of manufacturer shipping windows.
