A differential fluid job doesn’t put much weight strain on a lift compared to an engine pull, but it does something worse for cylinder seals — it means the lift sits fully extended, at height, for the whole service window while a tech drains and refills gear oil underneath. That extended-hold time is exactly when a marginal seal starts to weep. The wiper is the first line of defense and the first thing to fail; it’s a simple lip seal that keeps dirt and moisture off the rod as it strokes, and once it hardens or cracks, contaminants get past it and start working on the rod seal underneath. The rod seal is what actually holds pressure, so once the wiper’s gone, the rod seal’s lifespan gets cut dramatically.

We size rebuild kits by cylinder model number, not by guesswork, because a seal that’s a few thousandths off on inner diameter will either bind on the rod or leak from day one. On a dealership running differential fluid jobs all day, we typically see wiper seal wear show up around the two to three year mark on high-cycle lifts, sooner if the shop floor tracks in a lot of grit from a gravel lot. Pulling the cylinder, honing out light scoring, and repacking with a fresh seal kit is almost always cheaper than replacement, and it’s the kind of job we can often turn around same-day if the cylinder’s already off the lift.

Not every worn cylinder needs a full replacement, but not every one can be saved with a seal kit either. We pull the cylinder and check the bore for scoring depth — light scoring polishes out, deep scoring means the bore’s compromised and a hone won’t fix it. We check the rod for straightness, because a rod that’s taken a side-load hit from an uneven lift or an off-center vehicle won’t seal no matter how good the new kit is. And we check the base and gland threads for wear, since a stripped gland means the whole top end needs replacing even if the seals themselves would’ve been fine.

For a dealership on a service schedule, we try to give a straight answer fast: rebuildable, or not. We’ve seen shops get quoted vague numbers by other outfits and end up paying for a rebuild attempt on a cylinder that was never going to hold, then paying again for the replacement anyway.
