That’s the pattern we see over and over with EV shops opening in converted buildings, old tire stores, and strip-mall bays never built for a two-post or four-post lift. Myth: Any Concrete Slab Will Hold a Two-Post Lift

This is the single biggest myth we run into, and it’s the one that stops an install cold on day one. EV shops working out of older buildings often have concrete that was poured for light retail or storage, not for anchoring a 10,000 lb or 12,000 lb two-post lift under load. Thickness, cure time, and rebar all matter, and a slab that looks fine to the eye can still fail an anchor pull test. We’ve had jobs quoted assuming lift delivery and install on a set date, only to find on arrival that the floor needs core samples or a new pour before anchors go in.

For differential fluid service specifically, the lift also needs to sit level and square so fluid drains correctly and the tech isn’t fighting a tilted vehicle while working underneath. We always ask about slab age and thickness before we schedule a crew, because catching a bad floor in the survey phase costs a phone call. Catching it on install day costs a wasted trip and a rescheduled crew, and that’s money and time neither of us wants to spend.

Myth: Ceiling Height Only Matters for Lifted Trucks

EV shop owners tend to think about ceiling clearance in terms of the tallest truck or SUV they’ll ever lift, but they forget to account for the lift’s own travel height plus the vehicle plus any roof-mounted battery service equipment. A four-post lift with a vehicle raised to a comfortable working height for differential fluid access can eat more vertical space than people expect, especially with drive-on ramps and any add-on rolling jack bridge for wheel work. We’ve measured bays where the numbers worked on paper but felt tight the moment the lift was fully raised.

This matters more for EV shops because many battery and differential service procedures want the vehicle at full height, not partial lift, so there’s no fudging the clearance by only raising it halfway. Before we get auto lifts installed anywhere, we walk the bay with a tape measure and check overhead obstructions — sprinkler heads, ductwork, lighting fixtures — that don’t show up on a floor plan. It’s a fifteen-minute check that prevents a lift from being installed and then discovered unusable at full height.

Myth: Electrical and Hydraulic Hookups Are the Installer’s Problem Alone

Some shop owners assume the install crew shows up, plugs in the lift, and everything works. In reality, most two-post and four-post lifts need dedicated power run to spec before the crew arrives, and that’s on the shop’s electrician, not us. We’ve had jobs go smoothly specifically because the customer had their electrician run power to the install manual’s spec ahead of time, gates open, access clear, and the crew rolling within the hour. We’ve also had jobs stall because power wasn’t there yet and the lift sat crated for a week.

For EV shops this gets an extra wrinkle: many bays already have significant electrical load from charging equipment and battery diagnostic stations, so the circuit for the lift needs its own planning, not an afterthought squeezed onto an already-loaded panel. Getting this settled during the survey means the install date holds instead of sliding.

Myth: Delivery and Install Happen the Same Day, Automatically

A lot of shop owners picture one truck showing up with the lift and installers in the same visit. Sometimes that’s how we quote it — taking delivery of the lift ourselves and bringing it with us for the install — but plenty of jobs are quoted the other way, where the shop takes delivery and stages the lift on site ahead of our crew’s arrival. Either way works, but it has to be decided up front, because a mismatch between what’s quoted and what’s expected on install day is the number one scheduling headache we deal with.

We also always ask whether there’s a forklift on site, whether there’s loading dock access or just a gravel entrance around back, and whether there’s a pit or clear slab where the lift is going. One EV shop we worked with had us use a second gravel entrance with a gate a few hundred feet from the main entrance — small detail, but if we hadn’t asked, the crew would have shown up at the wrong door. Nail down delivery logistics during the site survey and the install date actually holds.

Myth: A Standard Two-Post Layout Works for Any Differential Service Bay

Differential fluid service means the tech is working underneath the vehicle at a working height, often needing to access a drain plug, fill plug, and sometimes a rear axle housing that isn’t centered where a generic bay layout assumes. If the lift arms and columns aren’t positioned with enough drain-pan clearance and swing room for tools, a differential job turns into a wrestling match. We size and place lifts based on the actual vehicles the shop services most, not a generic template, because EV platforms often have different wheelbase and undercarriage layouts than the gas vehicles a bay was originally planned around.

We also talk through arm reach and pad placement specifically for EV lift points, since battery pack housings and structural skid plates sit differently than a traditional gas drivetrain. Getting this right during the survey — not after auto lifts installed and bolted down — saves an EV shop from finding out the hard way that the arms don’t reach the lift points cleanly.

Myth: Lift Locks and Safety Mechanisms Don’t Need a Second Look After Install

We’ve inspected shops with several two-post lifts where the locks weren’t engaging correctly on one unit, sometimes discovered only during a routine inspection years after the original install. It’s an easy thing to overlook because the lift still raises and lowers fine — the problem only shows up under specific conditions. For an EV shop running differential fluid service under a raised vehicle for extended periods, a lock that doesn’t fully engage is not a minor issue.

Part of a proper install includes verifying every safety lock engages cleanly at multiple heights, not just running the lift up and down once. We build that check into every install we do, and we recommend shops schedule a lock and lift-service verification at least annually after that, especially in a busy EV bay running lifts daily. It’s a small step that catches problems long before they become a safety incident.

Myth: Install Prep Doesn’t Matter for a Small Independent EV Shop

Some owners assume that survey-level prep is only for big dealerships or fleet accounts with six or eight lifts going in at once. We treat a single-lift install for an independent EV specialty shop with the same site survey rigor as a multi-lift dealership job, because the failure points — bad concrete, tight clearance, missing power, mismatched delivery expectations — don’t care how many lifts are on the order. A one-lift mistake costs an independent shop proportionally more downtime than a dealership with seven other working bays.
