When an independent shop owner in Davenport called us trying to figure out which configuration made more sense for exhaust and driveline work, the question wasn’t about price first — it was about access. Auto lifts installed the wrong way for that kind of work mean fighting a lift arm every time a tech needs to drop a driveshaft or slide a full exhaust system out in one piece. We’ve installed enough lifts across eastern Iowa to know the answer usually comes down to a side-by-side comparison of two real configurations: a standard two-post overhead lift versus a four-post drive-on lift. Why This Comparison Comes Up So Often

Exhaust and driveline work is different from a basic oil change or tire rotation. The tech needs unobstructed access to the entire underside of the vehicle — from the headers back to the tailpipe, and often side to side to drop a transmission or transfer case. That’s exactly the situation this Davenport shop was in: mostly older domestic trucks and SUVs coming in for full exhaust replacements and U-joint work, with the occasional driveline swap. They had one aging lift that was making the job harder than it needed to be, and they wanted auto lifts installed that would actually speed up that kind of work instead of getting in the way.

We see this same question from body shops, independent repair shops, and even ag equipment dealers. It’s rarely about horsepower or lift capacity alone — most shops already know they need something in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range for trucks. The real decision is arm geometry versus platform design, and that’s where the two-post versus four-post comparison actually matters. Get this part wrong and you end up with a lift that technically holds the vehicle but makes every driveline job take twenty extra minutes of arm-swapping and cursing.

Configuration One: Two-Post Overhead for Open Access

A two-post lift, something like a Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger CL10, clears the columns out to the sides of the vehicle and lifts from four contact points under the frame. For exhaust and driveline access, this is usually the winner. With no platform or runway underneath, a tech can walk completely under the vehicle, reach every hanger, clamp, and flange without ducking around anything, and pull a full exhaust system out the side if needed. We recently quoted a 12K two-post Coats-style install for a NAPA-affiliated shop with exactly this kind of work in mind — straightforward install, lift delivered and set, techs under it working within the day.

The tradeoff is that two-post lifts require the arms to be positioned correctly on the frame rails every single time, which some techs find slower on high-volume tire or brake days. For a shop that’s mostly doing exhaust, U-joints, and driveline swaps rather than churning through quick-service work, that tradeoff barely matters. The open access wins the argument almost every time we run this comparison for a shop like this one.

Configuration Two: Four-Post Drive-On for Stability and Storage

A four-post lift, something in the Rotary or Forward lineup, uses runways the vehicle drives onto, which means no arm positioning at all — just drive up and lift. For alignment work or long-term vehicle storage this is the better tool. But for exhaust and driveline access specifically, the runways themselves become the obstacle. A tech working on a full exhaust system has to work around the platform rails, and dropping a driveshaft or transfer case often means using a rolling jack that has to clear the runway height first.

We still install plenty of four-post lifts for shops that need the stability and the ability to leave a vehicle sitting up in the air for days without tying up floor space. We handled exactly that kind of setup for an Omaha-area shop that needed a 14K four-post alignment lift alongside multiple two-post units, replacing five older lifts that had reached the end of their service life. But if exhaust and driveline access is the daily job, a four-post configuration isn’t the first thing we’d recommend for auto lifts installed in that bay.

Model Number and Spec Comparison That Actually Matters

Once a shop owner sees the access argument, the next question is always which specific model. For a Davenport shop doing trucks and SUVs, we typically compare a 10,000 lb two-post against a 12,000 lb two-post rated for the heavier duty trucks that occasionally roll through. The difference isn’t just weight capacity — it’s arm reach, overall height clearance for the shop’s ceiling, and runway-free design that both share. A Challenger CL10 or similar 10K unit handles the vast majority of passenger trucks and SUVs; stepping up to a 12K spec only matters if the shop regularly sees heavier one-ton trucks or work vans.

We also walk shops through overhead versus low-profile column height, since older buildings in the Quad Cities area sometimes have lower ceiling clearance than newer commercial builds. Getting the spec sheet right before the lift ever leaves the warehouse saves a return trip and saves the shop from ordering the wrong arm length for their typical vehicle mix. This is the part of the comparison that gets skipped when a shop just orders online without a local installer double-checking clearance and duty rating against the actual work being done.

What Installation Day Actually Looks Like

Once a shop settles on a configuration, the logistics questions start: do we have a forklift on site, is there a pit, is the concrete rated for anchor bolts, and what’s the lead time. These are the same questions we get from every customer, whether it’s a single-bay independent shop or a multi-bay dealership. For a straightforward two-post install, we typically need a clear bay, solid concrete of adequate depth, and either a forklift on site or the willingness to have us bring one — that alone can shift the quote by several hundred dollars depending on equipment access.

We coordinate delivery timing so the lift doesn’t sit in a parking lot for a week before install day. On multi-lift jobs, like a recent 4-post and 2-post move we scheduled over back-to-back days for an ag equipment company, we build in a buffer day in case anything runs long. That kind of scheduling honesty is part of why shops keep calling us back when they’re ready for the next bay.

What Happens to the Old Lift

Almost every comparison job involves an old lift coming out first. We’ve pulled everything from decades-old two-post units with locks that no longer engage properly to full inground lifts that need to be decommissioned entirely. For the Davenport shop, the old lift wasn’t unsafe, just poorly suited to the work — but we’ve also handled situations where a dealership group needed multiple lifts inspected and found lock mechanisms failing on units that looked fine at a glance. Part of any real spec comparison includes an honest look at what’s already on the floor, not just what’s going in next.

When lifts come out, we handle removal and disposal so the shop isn’t stuck figuring out how to scrap heavy steel columns and hydraulic cylinders on their own. Getting the Comparison Right Before You Order

The biggest mistake we see independent shops make is ordering based on price per lift without running the access comparison first. A cheaper four-post unit that fights every exhaust job isn’t actually cheaper once you count the labor hours lost to working around runways. We’d rather walk a shop owner through the real tradeoffs — arm geometry, duty rating, ceiling clearance, floor space — before anything ships, the same way we did for this Davenport shop, than have them call us back six months later wanting to redo the whole bay.
