We recently had auto lifts installed for a mobile mechanic who was setting up a home base shop just off the Iowa-Nebraska border, and the whole job turned into a good example of why the concrete conversation matters more than most people expect. He’d spent years working out of a service truck doing general daily maintenance for fleet accounts and farm customers, and he was finally putting in a fixed bay so he could stop crawling under trucks in gravel lots. He had a slab already poured. What he didn’t have was any idea whether that slab could actually hold a two-post lift safely, and that’s the exact conversation we have with a lot of guys in his position.

Why the Slab Came First, Not the Lift

Before we ever talked model numbers, we asked about the concrete. That’s the order it has to go in. A lot of guys call us ready to pick out a Rotary or a BendPak and get surprised when the first real question is about their floor, but auto lifts installed on the wrong slab is how you end up with cracked concrete, a leaning lift, or worse. For this customer, the pad had been poured a few years back for a pole building addition, not specifically for a lift, so we had no paperwork on thickness or rebar and had to verify in the field.

We drilled a small test hole near where the columns would sit to check depth and reinforcement, which is standard practice any time we don’t have engineering drawings for a slab. Most two-post lifts need a minimum of four inches of solid, unreinforced or properly reinforced concrete with a compressive strength rating that matches the lift manufacturer’s anchor bolt pull-test requirements. Anything less and you’re not just risking a warranty voided, you’re risking the lift itself failing under load. We’ve walked away from jobs before because the floor wasn’t there yet, and we’d rather tell a customer no upfront than have auto lifts installed on a pad that can’t take it.

What We Found With the Rebar

The rebar question is the one people almost never think to ask about until we bring it up. In this case, the slab had wire mesh reinforcement instead of rebar, which is common in pole barn and outbuilding pours but isn’t always ideal for anchor bolt performance under a loaded two-post lift. Wire mesh sits near the top of the pour and doesn’t add the same tensile strength deeper in the slab where anchor bolts need to grip.

We measured the mesh depth, confirmed the overall pour thickness held at just over four inches across the footprint we needed, and ran anchor pull tests at each column location before committing to the install. Two of the eight anchor points came in slightly under spec, so we relocated the column base a few inches to land on a stronger section of the pad rather than fighting the same soft spot. This is exactly the kind of adjustment that separates auto lifts installed correctly from lifts that get bolted down wherever it’s convenient. It cost us maybe forty extra minutes on site. It’s cheap insurance against a column working loose two years down the road.

Scheduling Around a Working Mobile Mechanic

One thing that made this job different from a typical shop install was that our customer was still running service calls the whole week we were scheduling. He wasn’t sitting around waiting on us, he was out doing oil changes, brake jobs, and general daily maintenance on client vehicles right up until install day. We coordinated a firm morning start time so he could plan his route around it, similar to how we handle scheduling for shops that need a lift ready before their bay opens back up.

Lead times matter here too. Depending on the model and current stock, a two-post lift can take anywhere from a few weeks to over a month to arrive before we even get to the install date. We always tell customers to lock in their order early if they’ve got a target date in mind, because auto lifts installed on schedule depends on the lift actually being on the truck. For guys running a mobile operation with a tight cash flow, knowing that lead time in advance lets them plan the last few weeks of truck work around the shop transition instead of getting caught flat-footed.

Forklift, Access, and What Changes the Quote

Access to the building changes the job more than people expect. If there’s a forklift on site, or if the lift components can be rolled in on a pallet jack without us needing to hand-carry everything through a standard door, that shaves real labor time off the install. In this case the shop had a twelve-foot overhead door and a tractor with forks available, which let us bring the columns and crossmember in fast instead of muscling them through a walk-in entrance.

We’ve quoted jobs before where the difference between a pallet coming off a lift gate outside versus a customer having equipment to move it inside the shop ran a couple hundred dollars either direction. It’s worth mentioning your access setup when you first call, because it changes both the price and the crew size we bring. For a border-county install like this one, where the shop was a decent drive from our Ames base, getting the logistics right on the first trip out mattered even more since a second trip for a missed detail costs everybody time.

Two-Post vs Drive-On for a General Service Bay

For a shop doing general daily maintenance work, oil changes, brakes, tires, inspections, a standard two-post asymmetric lift is almost always the right call over a four-post drive-on. Two-post lifts give full underbody access for exhaust work, suspension, and drivetrain jobs that a drive-on simply can’t match. Drive-on four-post lifts are better suited to alignment work or long-term storage where wheels-off access isn’t the priority.

We walked through this with our customer since he was coming from mobile work where he’d never had a lift at all, just jack stands and a floor jack. Once we explained the tradeoffs, the choice was easy for his use case. He wanted the flexibility to pull wheels off for brake work and get under the frame for undercarriage inspections, which two-post setups handle far better. This is a conversation we have constantly with new shop owners, and it’s part of why we spend time on the phone before a quote ever goes out, not just after.

Electric, Air, and Getting the Bay Actually Ready

A slab that passes the rebar and thickness check is only part of being ready. We also confirmed the electrical service could handle the hydraulic power unit’s draw and that there was a reasonably close air line if he planned to run impact tools or tire equipment near the bay. Shops sometimes assume the lift itself is the whole project, then get surprised when they need an electrician out before we can even power up the unit on install day.

For this job, the existing panel had enough capacity, so we didn’t need to loop in an outside electrician, but we’ve had plenty of installs where that step adds a week or two to the timeline. We always recommend customers check their panel capacity and run any needed conduit before we show up, because a crew standing around waiting on power is wasted time on both ends. Getting these pieces lined up ahead of time is what makes the actual install day move fast and clean.

What This Job Means for Other Iowa-Nebraska Border Shops

This install stuck with us because it’s a pattern we see a lot along the border counties: mobile mechanics who’ve built a solid customer base on the road and are finally ready to plant a flag with a real bay. The transition usually goes smoothly, but only when the concrete gets checked honestly instead of assumed. We’d rather find a soft spot in the slab during a test hole than after a lift’s been loaded a hundred times.
