When a city or county fleet garage calls us about getting auto lifts installed, the conversation almost always starts with alignment work. A public works shop or a sheriff’s department garage along the Iowa-Illinois corridor needs a bay that can hold a pickup, a plow truck, and sometimes a squad car, all on the same rack, all within alignment tolerance. That’s a different job than a quick-service tire shop. We’ve walked into municipal garages with low ceilings, tight column spacing, and concrete nobody’s touched since the Carter administration, and figured out whether an overhead or baseplate configuration actually fits. Why Alignment Bays Change the Overhead vs Baseplate Decision

Alignment work asks more of a lift than general repair. The vehicle needs to sit level, the runways need clear turn plates or slip plates near the front, and there has to be enough clearance for a tech to walk a full circle around the truck with an alignment camera or targets in hand. That’s the first thing we check before any auto lifts installed conversation goes further with a fleet manager. Overhead configurations put the crossbeam above the vehicle, which keeps the floor clear for turn plates and camber bars, but it demands real ceiling height, especially with plow trucks or box vans in the mix.

Baseplate configurations run the hydraulic and cable routing along the floor, which lowers the height requirement but puts a plate right where a fleet truck’s plow frame or push bumper often sits. We’ve measured more than one municipal bay where the baseplate footprint would have collided with mounting hardware on a plow truck the shop runs every winter. For fleets running mixed vehicles, from sedans to one-ton trucks, we usually walk the actual vehicle lineup before recommending either configuration, because the alignment rack that works for a squad car doesn’t automatically work for a dump truck.

Getting Auto Lifts Installed on Municipal Concrete

Municipal garages are often older buildings, and the concrete tells the story. Before we get auto lifts installed anywhere, we check slab thickness, rebar, and any old anchor holes from equipment that was torn out years ago. A lot of these buildings were poured for oil changes and brake jobs, not for the loading a two-post alignment lift puts on anchors during a lockout at full rise. If the slab doesn’t meet the anchor spec for the model going in, we say so up front instead of bolting it down and hoping.

We’ve also run into infloor heat in shop bays, which changes the install sequence entirely. On jobs like that we ask the customer to shut the heat off the night before so we can see the heat lines glow faintly in the morning cold and avoid drilling into a line. Fleet garages built decades ago sometimes have heat runs nobody has a drawing for anymore, so this walk-through step matters as much as the anchor bolt spec. Getting this part right avoids a much bigger repair bill than the lift itself.

Overhead Configuration: Pros for Fleet Alignment Work

An overhead setup keeps the entire floor plane open, which alignment techs appreciate when they’re rolling turn plates in and out or walking around a truck with a laptop and camera rig. There’s no floor-level cable or hose routing to trip over, and no baseplate edge to work around when a plow frame or aftermarket bumper sits low. For a corridor fleet running a mix of trucks with front-end accessories, that clearance is worth a lot.

The tradeoff is ceiling height and crossbeam clearance for tall vehicles like box trucks or lifted plow trucks. We’ve had to walk away from an overhead recommendation more than once because a garage’s roof trusses simply wouldn’t clear a raised dump truck bed. When the building allows it, though, an overhead configuration is usually our first suggestion for a dedicated alignment bay, because it gives the tech room to work without redesigning the workflow around a plate on the floor.

Baseplate Configuration: When It’s the Better Call

Baseplate lifts make sense in garages with lower ceilings or older roof structures that can’t take a crossbeam-mounted overhead unit. They’re also easier to relocate later if a municipal shop reconfigures bays, since there’s less structural attachment involved. For fleets that mostly work on sedans and light trucks without low plow frames, a baseplate configuration handles alignment work just fine and often costs less to get installed.

The catch is floor clearance. If the fleet runs anything with a low front accessory, a plow mount, brush guard, or push bumper, we check clearance against the baseplate footprint before recommending it. We’ve seen shops order a baseplate lift on their own, only to find out later that their plow trucks can’t drive onto it in winter configuration. That’s exactly the kind of detail we catch during a site visit before the quote goes out, not after the truck shows up.

Logistics: Forklifts, Freight, and Lead Time for Fleet Jobs

Municipal purchasing moves slower than a private shop, so lead time planning matters more here than almost anywhere else. Once a fleet manager gets a lift approved through purchasing, we ask the same questions every time: is there a forklift on site to unload freight, is there a loading dock or dock plate, and does the bay have a pit or is it a straight slab install. Answering those up front keeps the install date from slipping once the equipment actually arrives on the truck.

We’ve had jobs where the lift arrived and there was no forklift available on site, which turns a same-day install into a multi-day headache trying to source equipment locally. For a two-post or four-post unit going into a fleet garage, we coordinate delivery timing with our crew’s schedule so the truck shows up when we’re ready to unload and start, not sitting outside for a week. Getting auto lifts installed on a municipal timeline means building in a buffer for purchasing approval delays, freight scheduling, and any last-minute floor prep the site visit turned up.

Safety Checks We Run Before Signing Off

A safety-first walkthrough doesn’t end when the lift is bolted down. We test the locking mechanism at multiple height positions, check that arm restraints engage properly under load, and confirm the hydraulic system holds without drift before we call the job finished. For alignment work specifically, we also verify the runways sit level side to side, since even a slight lean throws off camber and toe readings before the tech ever picks up a tool.

We walk the fleet’s maintenance staff through daily inspection points too, because a municipal garage often has multiple people using the same bay across different shifts. That includes showing them what a worn cable or a cracked weld looks like, so small issues get reported before they become a lift going out of service mid-job. We’ve serviced lifts at auto shops after another company’s repair job left them getting stuck partway up and having to be walked down and back up again, which is exactly the kind of wear pattern a routine inspection habit catches early.
