A two-post lift needs enough width between the columns for the widest vehicle in the fleet, plus enough room on each side for a technician to walk around with a fluid catch pan during a differential service. We’ve walked into shops where the bay door swings inward and clips the arm sweep of a lift installed too close to the opening — nobody caught it until install day, and by then the anchors were already set once.

For race teams running trailers and tow rigs in and out constantly, we also look at drive-through clearance. If the shop needs vehicles to enter from one door and exit another, that changes where the lift can sit relative to both openings. Overhead garage doors that roll up versus doors that swing out change the math too — a swing door eats floor space a roll-up door doesn’t. We measure this on every site visit because a lift that’s perfect on paper but two feet too close to a door swing is a lift that gets used carefully forever instead of confidently every day.

Budget Tier One: Single Lift for a Small Trailer Shop

For a one- or two-bay operation running a single tow vehicle and trailer, the budget-friendly path is usually a mid-rise or low-rise scissor lift, or a single two-post rated for the vehicle’s actual weight — not oversized for a truck that never shows up. This tier works well in older buildings where ceiling height is tight and concrete thickness is unknown, since a mobile column setup can sidestep both problems entirely.

We size these jobs around what the shop actually services week to week. A crew chief working differential fluid service on one truck and one trailer doesn’t need the same lift as a five-bay commercial shop. Getting this tier right means the shop owner isn’t paying for capacity they’ll never use, and it keeps the install straightforward — less concrete work, less electrical, faster turnaround before the next race weekend.

Budget Tier Two: Two-Post Setup for a Growing Crew

Once a team is running multiple vehicles, hauling for other racers, or doing enough differential and driveline work that one lift creates a bottleneck, a properly rated two-post becomes the better call. This is where ceiling height and door swing really start driving the decision, because a full-rise two-post asks more of the building than almost any other equipment in the shop.

We’ve had auto lifts installed for teams at this tier where the building needed minor modification first — moving a light fixture, adjusting where a door swings, or confirming the slab could take new anchors. None of that is unusual, and none of it should be a surprise on install day. We flag it during the site visit, price it into the quote, and schedule around it so the crew isn’t left with a half-finished bay during race season.

Budget Tier Three: Multi-Bay Race Shop Buildout

Larger operations running several tow vehicles, trailers, and race cars through the same building often land on a mix — a couple of two-post lifts for daily differential and brake work, plus a four-post or drive-on for alignment and longer-term storage between events. At this tier, the decision tree branches again: do you stagger the lifts to share ceiling clearance, or commit to a taller building section for the tallest lift?

We walk through this with crew chiefs the same way we would a commercial fleet account, because the logistics are similar — concrete readiness, three-phase or single-phase power, and whether the building has a pit already or needs surface-mounted equipment. Getting auto lifts installed at this scale means sequencing the work so bays come back online one at a time instead of shutting the whole shop down before a big weekend.

What Concrete and Power Actually Need to Be Ready

No matter the tier, two things stop an install cold: concrete that’s too thin or too old to hold anchors, and power that isn’t run to where the lift needs to sit. We ask about slab thickness and age on every quote request, because a lift installed on cracked or underspec concrete is a liability the first time it’s loaded with a tow vehicle for differential service.

Electrical is the other piece people forget until install day. Some lifts run on standard single-phase circuits; others, especially larger four-post and commercial-grade units, want more. We’d rather know before our crew arrives than have them standing around waiting on an electrician. If a shop in northern Missouri already has the lift on-site and just needs it installed, we still walk through concrete and power questions on the phone first — it saves everyone a wasted trip.

Scheduling Around Race Weekends and Delivery Logistics
