Two Fleet Bays, Two Different Slab Stories

We like to walk fleet customers through a side-by-side comparison because it makes the decision concrete, literally. Configuration one is a two-post asymmetric lift set on a bay poured at four inches with light wire mesh, original to a building built in the 1990s for oil changes and tire work. Configuration two is a four-post drive-on lift set on a newer six-inch slab with rebar on 18-inch centers, poured specifically for heavier service work. Both shops wanted auto lifts installed for the same basic job: getting techs under service trucks and vans to drop exhaust systems and inspect or swap driveline components without a pit.

The outcome was night and day. The four-inch slab needed core samples and, in one case, a partial repour with proper rebar before we’d anchor a two-post lift rated for the weight of a one-ton service truck plus the shock loading of exhaust removal work. The six-inch reinforced slab passed inspection with standard wedge anchors and we had the lift in service the same week. Neither shop was wrong to want the equipment – they just started the conversation at different points, and that’s exactly why we ask about the floor before we ever quote the lift.

Why Slab Thickness Matters More for Two-Post Setups

A two-post lift concentrates all of the vehicle’s weight into four anchor points instead of spreading it across the tires the way a four-post drive-on does. When you’re lifting a service truck to work exhaust hangers, catalytic converters, or driveline U-joints, there’s also side-loading and vibration from impact tools that a slab has to absorb over thousands of cycles, not just hold once. Most reputable lift manufacturers, including the Rotary and Challenger lines we install, specify a minimum of four inches of properly cured, reinforced concrete, and that’s a floor, not a target.

What we see in older Iowa fleet buildings – garages built decades ago for lighter work – is unreinforced or lightly meshed slabs that were fine for hand tools and jack stands but were never engineered for a two-post asymmetric lift cycling several times a day. We’ve had to turn down anchoring lifts into slabs we couldn’t verify, and we’ve also had to explain to owners why a quote for auto lifts installed jumped once core samples came back thin. For exhaust and driveline work specifically, techs tend to position the lift arms and columns wherever gives them the best access, which means anchor points aren’t always in the most convenient part of the slab.

Good rebar placement, tied and set before the pour rather than dropped in loose, keeps the slab acting as one continuous structural unit instead of a collection of weak points. When we’re called out for auto lifts installed on a slab we didn’t pour ourselves, we ask for the original pour specs or foundation drawings if the fleet has them. When those aren’t available, core sampling at each anchor location is the honest way to know what we’re actually working with before anyone commits to an install date.

What Exhaust and Driveline Work Demands from the Lift Itself

Beyond the slab, the type of work matters for lift selection. Exhaust removal on trucks and vans often means working overhead with a torch or impact tools, so we steer fleet customers toward two-post configurations with good arm reach and clearance under the crossmembers, rather than a scissor lift that can crowd the workspace. Driveline access – dropping a driveshaft, servicing a transfer case, or pulling a U-joint – usually wants the vehicle at full height with clear access from both sides, which a two-post or four-post lift both handle, just with different footprints and different anchor demands.

We’ve installed both configurations for small Iowa fleets and the right call really does come down to vehicle mix and bay size as much as slab condition. A fleet running mixed pickups and cargo vans benefits from the flexibility of a two-post lift’s adjustable arms. A fleet running heavier one-ton or medium-duty trucks sometimes does better on a four-post with a rolling jack for driveline drops, since the frame contact points on bigger trucks can be inconsistent. Either way, we size the lift to the actual vehicles on the lot, not a generic capacity number.

Freight, Access, and Getting the Lift On Site

Once the slab question is settled, logistics come next. We ask every fleet customer the same practical questions before we schedule: is there a forklift on site to unload freight, is the bay clear, and does the shop have a pit or is this a surface mount.
