That one detail decides whether you end up with an overhead two-post or a baseplate two-post, and it changes everything else about the bay: bolt pattern, concrete requirements, and how your techs actually work around the vehicle during an alignment. Why Configuration Matters More for Alignment Bays

A general service bay can usually get away with either lift style, but an alignment bay is a different animal. Alignment work means the vehicle needs to sit level, the wheels need clean sightlines for the rack’s cameras or targets, and techs need unobstructed access to all four corners without ducking under an overhead beam. That’s the main reason so many shops ask us specifically about baseplate configurations when the bay is dedicated to alignments – there’s no header beam running across the top of the bay to interfere with target placement or overhead lighting for the alignment system.

That said, overhead two-post lifts aren’t automatically wrong for alignment work. Plenty of fleet shops we’ve worked with run overhead units successfully, especially when ceiling height is generous and the alignment equipment is calibrated with clearance in mind. The real decision point is whether your building was built with lift clearance in mind at all, which is common in older municipal garages that were originally designed around lube racks or general repair, not precision alignment work. Before we quote auto lifts installed for a bay like this, we walk the site, measure ceiling height, check for existing anchor points, and ask what alignment system you’re running or planning to run.

Overhead Two-Post: Where It Still Makes Sense

Overhead two-post lifts put the swing arms and locking mechanism up top, out of the way of the floor. For a fleet garage servicing pickups, vans, and light trucks, that layout keeps the bay floor clear for jacks, transmission stands, and rolling tool carts, which matters when you’re turning multiple vehicles through the same bay in a day. If your building already has adequate ceiling clearance – and a lot of Cedar Rapids municipal shops built in the last couple decades do – an overhead configuration gives you strong lifting capacity without eating into floor space.

The tradeoff for alignment specifically is that the overhead beam and arm assembly can occasionally interfere with tall wheel targets or camera-based alignment heads, depending on your system and how the lift is positioned in the bay. We’ve had fleet customers work around this just fine by positioning the lift with extra clearance on the approach side, but it’s a conversation we have before installation, not after. When we get auto lifts installed in a bay that’s going to double as general repair and alignment, overhead often wins because of the versatility, and we size the lift capacity to the heaviest vehicle in your fleet, not just your average sedan or pickup.

Baseplate Two-Post: The Alignment-First Choice

Baseplate lifts run their columns straight up from a floor-mounted base with no overhead beam connecting them. For alignment-dedicated bays, this is usually our recommendation, because it gives techs and equipment a completely open envelope above the vehicle. There’s nothing to interfere with laser alignment heads, camera targets mounted at height, or the extra lighting rigs some shops use for precision work.

Baseplate configurations also tend to be more forgiving in older buildings with lower ceiling heights, which we run into constantly in established Iowa municipal garages. The columns still need solid concrete and correct anchoring, and we check slab thickness and condition before every install regardless of configuration, but you’re not fighting a ceiling clearance number the way you can be with overhead units. If your fleet shop is standing up a dedicated alignment bay from scratch, or converting an existing bay, baseplate is worth serious consideration specifically because it removes the one variable most likely to cause headaches with alignment equipment down the road.

Concrete, Anchoring, and Site Readiness

Every lift installation, alignment bay or not, starts with the floor. Before we schedule auto lifts installed at any municipal or fleet location, we ask about slab age, thickness, and whether there’s a pit, floor drain, or old anchor pattern in the footprint we’re working with. Cedar Rapids has plenty of older municipal garages with concrete poured decades ago, and it’s not unusual for us to find it doesn’t meet the thickness or cure requirements for a heavier two-post rating without additional reinforcement.

We also ask upfront whether there’s a forklift on site, or whether the lift will need to come off a trailer by hand, because that changes both scheduling and cost. Freight timing matters too – lifts often arrive on their own schedule from the manufacturer, and we coordinate our install dates around that so your bay isn’t sitting half-finished for weeks. For fleet managers juggling budget cycles and vehicle downtime, getting this logistics conversation right at the start saves a lot of frustration once the crew shows up.

Capacity Planning for a Mixed Municipal Fleet

Municipal fleets rarely run one type of vehicle. Municipal shops turn a lot of vehicles through alignment bays, and it’s easy for that habit to slip after months of routine use.
