Getting auto lifts installed the right way is less about the lift itself and more about the order you do things in — and we learned that lesson again recently on a job just across the Iowa line that mirrors calls we get constantly from mobile mechanics setting up shop in northern Missouri. A tech who’d spent years running a service van doing tire rotation and wheel work out of driveways was finally putting down roots in a fixed bay. He wanted a two-post lift, a tire changer, and a balancer all in one build-out, and he wanted it done in the right sequence so he wasn’t tearing out concrete twice. Why sequencing comes before the lift order

Every time we get a call from a mobile mechanic converting a pole barn or a rented bay into a real shop, the first mistake we try to head off is ordering the lift before anything else is planned. Auto lifts installed on fresh concrete is easy. Auto lifts installed around a slab that’s already got a tire changer bolted down in the wrong spot, or an air line run through where the post needs to go, is a headache we’ve cleaned up more than once. On this northern Missouri build-out, the tech had already poured his slab for a general shop but hadn’t marked out bay clearances for a two-post before he did it.

We walked him through what we tell everyone: figure out the lift footprint and door swing first, then work outward to the tire equipment, then the air compressor, then the electrical. Tire rotation and wheel work in particular needs generous clearance on both sides of the lift arms for a tire cart to pass, plus enough runway behind the lift for a balancer. Get that wrong and you’re either working around a support column for years or paying to relocate anchors later. Sequencing isn’t glamorous, but it’s the difference between a shop that flows and one that fights you every day.

Concrete readiness and what we check before we show up

Before any crew rolls out, we ask the same questions we’d ask a shop in Ames or Marshalltown: how thick is the slab, how old is it, and is there a pit or is this strictly drive-on. A four-inch slab poured within the last month hasn’t fully cured and won’t hold anchors reliably yet. We’ve had customers assume a driveway-grade pour would work fine for a 10,000 lb two-post, only to find out mid-install that the concrete needs to be broken out and repoured in the anchor zones. That’s not a surprise anyone wants on install day.

We also ask whether there’s a forklift on site, because unloading a two-post lift off a flatbed without one turns a half-day job into a full-day job fast. For this northern Missouri build-out, the tech didn’t have a forklift, so we coordinated delivery timing with our crew’s equipment instead of leaving him to figure out unloading himself. If your build-out is still in the planning stage, get a core sample or at least a straight answer on slab thickness before you call — it saves everyone a wasted trip and gets your auto lifts installed on the first visit instead of the second.

Choosing between two-post, four-post, and drive-on for tire work

For pure tire rotation and wheel work, a two-post lift is usually the right call because it gives full access to all four wheels with nothing blocking the tire cart or the impact gun. That’s what we specced for this build-out — a mid-rise two-post sized for the range of trucks and cars this tech services on the road. A four-post drive-on setup is a fine choice too, especially if the shop also does alignments, but it can get in the way of a tire machine workflow if the runways aren’t positioned with enough side clearance.

We talk customers through Rotary and Challenger options depending on the vehicle mix and ceiling height, since those are the brands we stand behind for commercial two-post and four-post work. A mobile mechanic moving into a fixed bay usually doesn’t need a full commercial capacity lift, but we still spec generously — trucks get bigger every model year, and nobody wants to buy twice. Once auto lifts installed on day one turn out undersized for the fleet a shop actually services, that’s a costly redo nobody enjoys paying for.

Power, air, and utility placement around the lift

One thing that trips up almost every build-out we’ve seen, including this one, is running electrical and air lines before the lift position is locked in. We had a similar situation recently where a crew showed up to install a lift and the motor that shipped was 220-volt when the shop only had 110 run to that wall. That kind of mismatch is avoidable if the electrical plan waits until the lift model and its power requirements are confirmed, not the other way around.

Air is the same story. A shop compressor sized and placed for tire work should feed reels positioned so hoses don’t cross the lift’s swing path or get pinched under a car being raised. We recommend deciding compressor placement after the lift footprint is set, not before, and leaving enough slack in the lines to accommodate whichever tire equipment ends up going in next to the bay. On this job, the tech realized once the lift was placed that a small floor-standing compressor made more sense than the larger unit he’d originally budgeted for, since the lift didn’t leave room for the bigger tank he’d planned.

What install day actually looks like

Most two-post jobs like this one run a full day, sometimes a half day if the concrete is solid and anchors go in without a fight. Our crews drive anchors down flush with the floor when possible; if they won’t seat, we cut them off rather than fight a slab that’s not cooperating. For a mobile mechanic converting a single bay, that’s usually a one-day event start to finish, and by afternoon the lift is standing and torque-checked.

We also walk through what needs to be true before we call a job finished: outer frame bolted down, arms swinging freely, safety locks engaging on both posts, and nothing catching on the platform as it travels. We’ve seen jobs elsewhere get called done by an installer when the lift wasn’t actually secured on the outer frame, and the shop couldn’t safely use it that night. We don’t sign off until it’s right, and we tell customers to push back hard if any installer tells them otherwise.

Freight, delivery, and lead time realities

Northern Missouri and southern Iowa customers ask us the same logistics questions every time: how long is the lead time, is there a forklift needed on-site, and can we coordinate delivery with the install crew so the lift doesn’t sit outside for a week. Lead times shift depending on the manufacturer and the season, so we always give a current estimate rather than quoting from memory, and we build delivery and install into one coordinated visit whenever the site allows it.

For this build-out, we scheduled delivery a day ahead so the lift was staged and inspected for shipping damage before our crew arrived to do the actual install. That single extra day caught a missing pressure hose fitting that would have delayed the job if we’d discovered it on install morning instead. We’d rather find a shortage the day before than have a crew standing around waiting on a part.
