Once your auto lifts are installed and running daily loads, the cables become the wear item nobody thinks about until they see fraying strands at an anchor point or hear a odd creak on the way up. On a two-post lift, cables synchronize the arms so both sides rise together, and a stretched or damaged cable throws that sync off before it ever snaps. We’ve walked into shops where a tech noticed one side sitting a half-inch lower and assumed it was just settling, when really the cable had already started to give.

This matters even more in a state like ours, where a shop might run three lifts through Iowa winters with salt brine tracked in on every truck and trailer that rolls through the bay door. That salt finds its way into cable sheaves and anchor points faster than most owners expect. We tell every foreman the same thing: the lift itself might be rated for decades, but the cables are a consumable, not a permanent part, and treating them otherwise is how a routine lift job turns into an insurance claim.

What a Body Shop Foreman Should Check Daily

You don’t need a service tech on-site every day to catch problems early. A foreman running daily maintenance on a two-post lift should look at the cables during the morning walk-around, before the first vehicle goes up. Look for broken strands, rust bloom, or flat spots where the cable rides over a pulley repeatedly in the same position. Any visible kinking is an automatic stop-use until someone qualified looks at it.

We also tell shops to listen. A lift that’s been smooth for months and suddenly groans or clicks on the way up or down is telling you something changed in the cable path or the sheave bearings. Northwest Iowa shops running high daily volume, especially tire and quick-lube operations, put more cycles on a lift in a week than a small independent garage does in a month, so that daily glance matters even more. When we get called out for cable replacement on lifts we didn’t originally install, it’s almost always because that daily check got skipped for a few weeks in a row.

Replacement Intervals We Actually Recommend

There’s no single mileage-style number that fits every shop, but we give a practical range based on what we see in the field. A lift running average daily cycles in a typical independent shop should have its cables inspected closely every six months and replaced somewhere in the two to four year range, sooner if you’re in a high-cycle environment like a tire store or quick-lube bay. We recently handled a job for a multi-lift auto shop where the customer replaced cables on one lift while having the rest of their two-post and four-post units inspected and adjusted in the same visit, which is exactly the kind of proactive scheduling that keeps a fleet of lifts running without surprises.

Signs a Cable Is Past Its Service Life

Another is excessive stretch, where the cable has to travel further than it used to for the same lift height, which usually shows up as the lift taking noticeably longer to reach full travel.

Rust on the inside strands, visible even when the outer jacket looks fine, is another red flag we catch during inspections that a shop foreman might not think to check without pulling the cable slightly to inspect underneath. We also look at the cable ends and swage fittings, since a fitting that’s started to slip is just as dangerous as a frayed cable and often less visible. Any of these signs means it’s time to schedule a cable swap rather than waiting for a scheduled interval to arrive.

What Cable Replacement Actually Involves

Replacing cables isn’t a five-minute job, and we tell foremen that up front so nobody’s surprised by the time it takes. It involves relieving the load on the lift safely, removing the old cable from the anchor and sheave path, threading the new cable through in the exact same routing, and then carefully re-tensioning and testing under load before the lift goes back into daily service. Skipping the re-tensioning step, or eyeballing it instead of setting it to spec, is how a shop ends up back on our schedule within a few months for the same issue.

Using a generic cable that’s close but not exact on diameter or length is a common mistake we see from shops that try to save money on the part itself, and it almost always costs more in a return visit.
