Arm restraints exist for one reason: to stop a swing arm from drifting out from under a vehicle once it’s already loaded, adjusted, and raised. On a busy tire and alignment bay, arms get repositioned constantly as techs chase pinch welds and lift points on different makes and models. Every time an arm moves, that restraint pin or lock needs to be reset before the vehicle goes up. Skip it once on a slow day and it becomes habit, and that’s when a vehicle settles wrong mid-lift.
We see this most in shops that run older Rotary or Challenger two-post lifts where the restraint hardware has been swapped, bent, or replaced with something that doesn’t quite match the original spec. Two-Post vs. Four-Post for General Daily Maintenance

But we also get calls from shops wanting a four-post drive-on added to the mix for general daily maintenance work — oil changes, brake jobs, quick inspections — where speed matters more than wheel-off access. The safety considerations are different on each. A four-post doesn’t have arm restraints in the same sense, but it does have its own locking pin system along the columns, and that pin needs to be engaged before anyone works underneath, full stop.
If your autolift garage is mixing two-post lifts for alignment bays with a four-post for general service, train your crew on both safety systems separately. We’ve seen techs who are excellent about the two-post cam habit accidentally skip the four-post locking pin because it’s a different motion entirely. Cross-training on lift safety, not just lift operation, is worth the extra ten minutes when you bring someone new onto the floor.
What We See Go Wrong Across Western Illinois Shops
