What Power an Autolift Garage Actually Needs

Most asymmetric two-post lifts used for suspension and shock replacement run on a 220-volt single-phase circuit, typically 20 to 30 amps depending on motor size, with a dedicated breaker and a hardwired or heavy-duty plug connection. Some larger commercial units, especially four-post alignment-style lifts dealerships use for corner work, step up to 208-240V three-phase if the building already has three-phase service for compressors or other shop equipment. Before we quote an install for a dealership building an autolift garage from scratch or retrofitting an existing bay, we ask what’s already running to that panel and how far the run is from the disconnect to the lift’s power unit location.

This matters more in older Council Bluffs buildings than people expect. A lot of dealership service departments were built decades ago and expanded piecemeal, so the panel that looks close on paper is sometimes 80 feet of conduit run away once you account for walls and existing ductwork. If a lift is cycling twenty or thirty times a day for shock and strut jobs, undersized wiring shows up as nuisance breaker trips or slow lift speed within the first few months, not immediately. That’s a service call we’d rather prevent than fix. When we spec an autolift garage setup for this kind of volume, we’re sizing the circuit for the daily cycle count, not just the lift’s minimum listed requirement.

Single-Phase vs Three-Phase in a Council Bluffs Dealership Bay

If a lift shares a circuit with something else in the shop and that other load spikes at the same moment a tech is lifting a loaded truck, you can get a nuisance trip mid-lift with a vehicle in the air — not a position anyone wants to be in. We’ve been called out to dealerships where the actual fix was as simple as separating a shared circuit, but by the time we got there it had already cost hours of diagnostic time and a service disruption in the bay.

Pit vs Surface-Mount Wiring Considerations

Whether the autolift garage setup is a surface-mount two-post or a pit-style in-ground lift changes where the electrical terminates and how much conduit protection it needs. Surface-mount lifts have the power unit sitting at floor level next to a post, so conduit typically runs along the wall or under a shallow trench cover to the unit. In-ground and pit-style installs route conduit into the pit itself, which means it has to be sealed and protected against the same hydraulic fluid and moisture exposure the cylinder deals with.

We get asked about pit access more than people expect, mostly from dealerships that inherited a building with an old pit lift already in place. On retrofits into existing buildings, the sequence usually runs concrete inspection first, then electrical, then the lift installation itself. Skipping that order is how shops end up drilling through conduit they didn’t know was there, or discovering the panel is farther from the bay than the original electrician’s drawing suggested.

Before any lift installation for a suspension and shock bay, we run through a checklist that covers more than just voltage. Is there a forklift or means to unload the lift on site, or does our crew need to bring one? Is the concrete cured and rated for the anchor pattern? Is the electrical panel close enough, and does it already have capacity, or does it need an upgrade? For dealerships specifically, we also ask about bay layout — suspension work needs enough clearance around the lift for a tech to work with springs and struts hanging, which sometimes changes where in the building the autolift garage bay makes the most sense.
