The most common myth we hear from European specialty shops is that any two-post or four-post will do the job as long as it lifts the car. That thinking works fine for oil changes and tire rotations, but differential fluid service on an Audi quattro or a BMW xDrive is a different animal. The rear diff, front diff, and transfer case all sit at different heights and angles than on a Chevy or Ford, and your tech needs full unobstructed access underneath with the vehicle at working height, not just wheels-off-the-ground height.

Then there’s labor efficiency, which is the piece most shops forget to put a number on. If your techs are losing even ten extra minutes per diff service because of poor arm access, and you’re doing that job several times a week for twenty years, that’s an enormous amount of unbilled or inefficient labor stacked up. Whichever configuration fits a shop’s actual mix of vehicles, the goal is the same: minimize the setup time and body-positioning fuss on every single job, because that time savings compounds across thousands of services over the life of the equipment. We always ask what specific models roll through the door most before we recommend anything.

Concrete, Power, and Space: The Logistics Nobody Budgets For

Even the right lift falls flat if the bay isn’t ready for it. We ask every shop the same basic questions before a job: is there a pit or flat slab, how thick and how old is the concrete, and is there 220-volt power within reasonable reach of the install location. On a lot of older Iowa City shop buildings, especially converted buildings near downtown, the concrete wasn’t poured with a heavy two-post in mind, and that changes both the install plan and the timeline.
