Myth: Any Autolift Garage Layout Works for EV Brake Bays

This is the biggest misconception we run into. A lot of shop owners assume that because a two-post lift held up fine under a gas-powered sedan for a decade, it’ll be fine under an EV of similar body style. The problem is curb weight. EVs routinely run 500 to 1,500 pounds heavier than their gas counterparts because of the battery pack, and that weight sits low and centered rather than distributed the way an engine and transmission distribute it. When you’re doing brake and rotor swaps all day, you need arms and pads that reach the correct lift points without straddling the battery enclosure, and you need a lift rated with margin above the vehicle’s actual weight, not just its advertised curb weight from the base trim.

We’ve walked into more than one autolift garage where the owner bought a lift based on square footage alone and didn’t check capacity ratings against the EVs they planned to service. Some owners think any arm configuration works fine for repetitive brake service. In practice, adjustable arms with quick-reach pads that land cleanly on EV lift points save meaningful time across a full day of appointments. We also hear from shops that a mid-rise or scissor-style lift would be simpler for pure brake work, and sometimes it is, particularly for a secondary bay dedicated only to rotors and pads. But for a shop doing rotor swaps alongside general EV diagnostics and battery-adjacent service, a properly rated two-post still tends to be the more versatile choice for the primary bay.

Myth: Warranty and Service Come From Wherever You Bought the Lift

A surprising number of shop owners assume warranty support automatically travels with the lift regardless of who installed it or where they bought it. That’s not how it works in practice. We handle warranty and service calls constantly for lifts we didn’t originally sell, but response time and parts availability are always faster when the installer knows the exact model, arm configuration, and anchoring details from day one. An EV brake shop can’t afford a lift sitting down for a week while someone tracks down documentation on a unit bought secondhand with no service history.

Cylinder rebuild and reseal work is routine, and for a shop running high daily cycle counts on brake work, cylinder wear is expected maintenance, not a failure. Myth: One Lift Type Fits Every EV Bay in the Shop

Finally, we push back on the idea that a shop needs to standardize on a single lift type across every bay. A busy EV brake shop in the Iowa-Illinois corridor often benefits from mixing a heavier-rated two-post for general service with a scissor or mobile column setup for a dedicated fast-turn brake bay. Mobile columns in particular give flexibility for shops still figuring out their EV service mix, since they can be repositioned as bay layout needs shift with demand.
