Myth 1: A Weeping Cylinder Always Means It’s Dead

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding we run into in any autolift garage, EV-focused or not. A cylinder that shows a thin film of hydraulic fluid on the ram isn’t automatically finished. In most cases that’s a worn packing gland seal or a scored rod doing exactly what a worn seal does — letting a tiny amount of fluid past under pressure. It’s a maintenance item, not a death sentence for the lift.

We’ve torn down plenty of cylinders that owners were ready to scrap, and found the barrel itself was in fine shape — no pitting, no bent rod, no cracked base. A reseal kit with fresh O-rings, wipers, and packing got the lift back to like-new lifting with a few hours of labor instead of the cost and downtime of a full cylinder swap. If you run an autolift garage where every bay matters for revenue, especially one servicing EVs where techs are under the vehicle constantly checking battery pack hardware, that downtime adds up fast. Myth 2: EV Weight Doesn’t Change Your Seal Maintenance Schedule

EVs are heavier than the combustion vehicles most two-post and four-post lifts were originally speced against, and that changes the math on seal wear whether owners realize it or not. A Model Y or an F-150 Lightning routinely runs 1,500 to 2,000 pounds heavier than the gas equivalent, and that extra static load on the cylinder seals every single lift cycle accelerates wear on the packing and wiper seals faster than a shop doing mixed sedan work.

We tell every EV specialty shop we work with in Iowa and western Illinois the same thing: don’t run the factory-recommended seal inspection interval that came with the lift when it was rated for lighter average vehicles. Cut it down. Check fluid levels and look for weeping monthly instead of quarterly if you’re lifting EVs and heavier trucks daily. It’s a five-minute visual check that catches a worn seal while it’s still a cheap fix, long before it becomes a cylinder you have to pull and send out. An autolift garage that skips this step because “the lift’s only a few years old” is the shop that calls us in a panic when a seal finally fails mid-lift.

Myth 3: Any Generic Seal Kit Will Fit Your Lift

We see this mistake constantly — a shop orders a generic aftermarket seal kit off a marketplace site because it’s cheaper, and it’s close enough in size that it seems to fit going in, only to fail within weeks because the durometer of the rubber or the exact groove dimension was off. Hydraulic cylinders on a Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, or Atlas lift are not universal parts, even when two models look similar side by side.

When you call us for a rebuild kit, we ask for the lift model and, ideally, the cylinder tag or part number, because that’s the only way to guarantee the seals actually seat correctly under pressure. A kit that’s a sixteenth of an inch off on the wiper seal groove will look installed correctly and then fail the first time the lift sees a full EV load. Myth 4: You Need a Full-Service Tech for Every Reseal

Plenty of shop owners assume a cylinder reseal requires a scheduled service visit and a wait on our calendar. For a lot of lift setups, that’s not true. If your techs are comfortable with basic mechanical work and you’ve got the right kit and instructions, a single or twin-post cylinder reseal is a job a competent shop tech can knock out in an afternoon, especially on above-ground lifts where the cylinder is easy to access without a pit.

Where it makes sense to call us instead is when the rod shows scoring, the bore has pitting, or you’re dealing with an inground cylinder where alignment and seal-and-cap torque really matter. Myth 3.5: Cheaper Fluid Doesn’t Affect Seal Life

This one surprises a lot of owners. Running the wrong hydraulic fluid, or topping off with whatever’s on the shelf instead of the fluid spec’d for that cylinder, breaks down seal material faster than normal wear would. Some cheaper fluids don’t have the same additive package, and over months of daily EV lifting cycles that difference shows up as premature seal failure that gets blamed on the seal kit instead of the fluid.

We always recommend sticking with the fluid type the manufacturer specs, and if you’re not sure what’s in your reservoir right now, that’s worth checking before your next reseal job rather than after another leak. It’s a small detail that a lot of otherwise well-run autolift garage operations overlook simply because nobody flagged it during install.

Myth 5: Warranty Covers Wear-and-Tear Seal Failure

We field this question constantly from newer shop owners. Most lift manufacturer warranties cover manufacturing defects in the cylinder itself — not normal wear-and-tear seal degradation from daily heavy-vehicle use. If your seals are failing at year three or four from ordinary EV and truck loading, that’s typically outside the warranty window regardless of brand, whether it’s a Rotary, Challenger, or BendPak unit.

That’s not us trying to sell you something — it’s just how lift warranties are structured industrywide, and we’d rather you know that going in than get surprised when you call the manufacturer expecting a free part. Budgeting for a reseal kit every few years as routine maintenance, the same way you’d budget for brake fluid or tire equipment consumables, keeps your autolift garage running without the surprise expense.

Myth 6: All Lift Brands Rebuild the Same Way

Not even close. A Rotary cylinder rebuild and a Challenger cylinder rebuild use different seal geometries, different packing nut torque specs, and sometimes different fluid recommendations entirely. Shops that try to apply the same rebuild process across every lift on their floor end up with inconsistent results — one lift resealed perfectly, another leaking again in a month because the torque sequence didn’t match that brand’s spec.
