Why Ceiling Height Is the First Question We Ask

Door Swing and Drive-In Clearance Nobody Thinks About

Ceiling height gets all the attention, but door swing is the other half of the equation people forget. If you’re installing a two-post lift, the arms need to swing out wide enough to reach under the pinch points on a full-size truck, and that swing radius has to clear your garage door track, side walls, and any support posts. We measure the door opening width and the depth from the door to the back wall before we ever recommend a specific model.

For a home garage that also needs to fit a truck for inspections and daily driving, we usually recommend at least 10 feet of clear width per bay and enough depth that the vehicle’s mirrors don’t clip the door frame on the way in. Overhead garage door tracks are another sneaky conflict — if the lift’s crossbar or overhead beam sits too close to the door track, you’ll clang metal on metal every time the door opens. We caught this exact issue on the border-area quote and repositioned the anchor bolts six inches forward, which kept everything clear without touching the door hardware.

The Cost Breakdown: Lift, Ramps, and Install

Customers almost always ask us to itemize the quote so they can see where the money actually goes, and that’s a fair ask. Concrete Readiness Matters as Much as the Lift Model

Two-Post vs. Four-Post for Annual Inspection Work

For someone doing their own annual state inspections, the choice between a two-post and a four-post setup comes down to what you’re inspecting and how you want to work underneath it. A two-post gives full underbody access for brake, suspension, and undercarriage checks, which is exactly what inspections focus on. A four-post drive-on is faster to load and safer for storage between uses, but underbody access is more limited unless you add a rolling jack bridge.

For the quick-lube operator handling his own truck inspections, we leaned toward a two-post configuration because he needed to get under the frame regularly, not just park and store. If your home garage lift is doing double duty as both a storage lift and a working lift for inspections, oil changes, and brake jobs, that access question should drive the decision more than price alone.
