Why Arm Restraints Matter More on a Wheel Bearing Job Than Almost Any Other Repair

Wheel bearing work is unique because you’re often working right at the corner where the swing arm sits, applying torque, using a press or a hammer, and sometimes bracing your body weight against the car. Automotive two post lifts rely on their arm restraints to keep the swing arms locked in position under the vehicle once you’ve set your lift points. If a restraint pin is worn, bent, or missing entirely, that arm can walk or swing when you least expect it, which shifts your load and can drop a corner of the car.

We’ve seen this exact issue on older lifts that have been in storage or passed between a couple of owners. A guy in the Des Moines area recently had us look at an older Rotary SPOA9-200 that needed its restraint gear and pawl gear replaced along with the lock cable before it was safe to trust again. That’s a lift that had been running fine for years, but the wear was gradual and easy to miss unless you specifically check the restraint mechanism on every arm. Before you hand over cash for a used unit, cycle every arm restraint by hand and make sure each one locks with a positive, audible click, not a mushy half-engagement.

How the Safety Cam and Lock System Actually Works on a Two Post Lift

The safety cam engagement system is what keeps the lift carriage from free-falling if hydraulic pressure is lost. As you raise the lift, a mechanical cam or pawl catches into a notched bar at intervals, so even if a hose fails or a cylinder loses seal, the carriage is mechanically supported rather than relying on hydraulics alone. On automotive two post lifts, this system needs to disengage cleanly on the way down too, usually through a release cable or lever, and re-engage crisply going back up.

When you’re evaluating a used lift, run it up and down a few times and listen for the cam catching evenly on both columns. Uneven engagement, where one side catches and the other slips past a notch or two, usually means the cable is stretched or the equalizer needs adjusting. We regularly get called out to adjust cables on four-post equipment and to true up the equalizer cables on two-post units for exactly this reason, and it’s a fixable problem, but it’s not something you want to discover after the car is already in the air with a wheel off for a bearing swap. If a seller can’t demonstrate smooth, even engagement on both sides, that’s a real point to negotiate on or walk away from.

Capacity and Column Spacing for the Vehicles You Actually Own

A common mistake hobbyist buyers make is picking automotive two post lifts based on price alone without checking whether the column width and capacity match their vehicles. If you’re running trucks or larger SUVs for wheel bearing work, you want a lift rated comfortably above your heaviest vehicle’s weight, not right at the edge. A 9,000-lb capacity unit like an older Atlas or Rotary model handles most daily drivers and half-ton trucks fine, but if you’ve got anything heavier on your someday-list, it pays to size up now rather than replace the lift later.

Column spacing matters just as much. Wider trucks and dual-rear-wheel setups need enough spacing between the columns to actually swing the arms under the frame rails without fighting the door or fender. We’ve quoted replacement lifts for shops where the existing spacing was 10 feet 10 inches, and getting a new unit that close in width was critical to avoid moving other equipment in the bay. In a home garage, you may not have room to shift anything, so measure your bay width and your widest vehicle’s track before you fall in love with a listing.

Inspecting Cables, Sheaves, and Footpads Before You Buy

Cables, pulleys, and footpad assemblies wear out quietly over years of use, and on a lift that’s been sitting or lightly used, that wear can be hard to spot with a quick glance. Fraying near the cable ends, glazed or grooved sheaves, and bent or cracked footpads are all common on older automotive two post lifts, especially anything that’s changed hands a few times. Ask the seller directly whether the cables, lower sheaves, and overhead sheaves have ever been replaced, and if they don’t know, budget for it yourself.

Footpad pin dimensions vary by manufacturer, so if you’re buying a used lift and think you might need replacement pads down the road, get the pin width and pin length before you commit. A lift with a slightly worn cable set is not a dealbreaker if the price reflects it and you can source parts easily, but a seller who’s evasive about maintenance history on the lifting hardware is a red flag worth taking seriously.

Concrete, Ceiling Height, and the Realities of a Home Garage Install

Before automotive two post lifts ever get bolted down, the slab underneath has to be able to handle it. Most residential garages were poured for parking, not for anchoring a lift that’s going to see repeated cycling under load. We ask every home buyer about slab thickness and age before recommending anchor bolt patterns, because a thin or cracked slab is the single most common reason an install gets delayed. If you’re not sure what you’re working with, a contractor or an installer can pull a core sample or at minimum check slab thickness at an exposed edge.

Ceiling height is the other constraint hobbyists forget until the lift is halfway up. A two-post lift needs enough overhead clearance for the raised carriage plus the vehicle’s height, and if you’re planning to leave a truck up on the lift while you work under the wheel well, you need real headroom to stand comfortably. Measure from your slab to the lowest overhead obstruction, including garage door tracks and light fixtures, before you buy anything.

Freight, Delivery, and What It Takes to Get the Lift On Site

Buying a lift is only half the project; getting it into your garage is the other half. Automotive two post lifts ship as heavy, awkward freight, and a lot of first-time buyers underestimate what’s involved in unloading columns and a power unit off a truck without a loading dock. We’ve had customers with lifts sitting in storage for months because nobody worked out delivery logistics ahead of time. Before you buy, ask whether the seller can deliver to your site, whether you’ll need a forklift or extra hands to unload, and whether there’s a realistic lead time if you’re ordering new.

If you’re buying used and picking it up yourself, plan for a trailer rated for the weight, straps rated for the load, and at least one extra person. Installation itself, including anchoring and hydraulic hookup, typically takes a trained crew a matter of hours for a straightforward two-post unit, but a DIY install without the right tools and torque specs on the anchors is where a lot of home installs go sideways. If in doubt, it’s worth paying for a professional install just for the anchor bolts and initial safety cam calibration.

What to Ask a Seller Before You Hand Over Any Money

Walking into a used equipment deal with a short list of questions saves you from expensive surprises. Ask the seller directly: has the safety cam or restraint gear ever been serviced, when were the cables last inspected or replaced, what’s the rated capacity and column spacing, and has it ever failed an annual inspection if one was ever done. A seller who has documentation or at least a clear, confident answer is worth more than one offering a rock-bottom price with no history.

It’s also worth asking whether the lift includes the original power unit, all four arm restraints, and a full set of footpads, since replacing missing components can eat up any savings from a discounted price fast. If you’re buying automotive two post lifts specifically for wheel bearing work, prioritize a unit where the arm restraints and safety cam are demonstrably solid over one that’s a little newer but has a shaky safety system.
