We’ve worked with a third-generation family garage in the Dubuque area that does restoration and metal fabrication work, and their freight day was a good reminder that the lift itself is only half the project — getting it off the truck safely is the part nobody plans for until the truck is already backing into the lot.

Why Freight Planning Matters More for a Restoration Shop

A restoration and metal work shop isn’t a typical tire bay. The columns for automotive two post lifts often run 10,000 to 15,000 lb capacity in this line of work because a rusted-out frame with a body cart, extra fixturing, or a partial chassis on it weighs more than a stock daily driver. That means the crated columns themselves are heavier and longer than a standard asymmetric lift, and the truck showing up with them is not always a small box truck — sometimes it’s a full semi with a lift gate that can’t handle the column weight safely.

We ask every customer up front: do you have a forklift on site, or access to a neighbor’s skid steer? One shop we quoted near Adel didn’t have a forklift but had a neighbor with a skid steer rated to handle the columns, and that worked fine once we confirmed the fork spacing and capacity. For a family-owned restoration shop doing heavier frame work, we usually recommend at least a 6,000 lb forklift with forks long enough to fully support an 11 or 12-foot column crate — not just tip it up on one end. Guessing on this ahead of delivery day is how columns get dropped or how a driver refuses to unload and leaves the freight on the trailer.

Column Dimensions and Ceiling Height in an Older Shop Building

Dubuque has plenty of older brick and block shop buildings that were never built with a modern two post lift in mind. Before we ship, we ask for ceiling height at the exact spot the lift will sit, not just the tallest point in the building — older trusses and duct runs can cut clearance right where you need it. A typical 10,000 to 12,000 lb asymmetric column runs somewhere around 129 to 141 inches overall height depending on the model, and you need working clearance above that for the arms to swing a raised vehicle without clipping a joist.

We also measure floor-to-ceiling at the anchor points themselves, not the doorway. A restoration shop with a body cart or a lift table rolling underneath a raised vehicle needs a few extra inches of arm reach compared to a standard sedan bay, and that changes which column height and arm length combination actually fits. Getting this wrong after the concrete anchors are already drilled means redoing anchor holes, which nobody wants on a shop floor that’s already busy with metal work.

Concrete Thickness and Anchor Requirements for Heavier Frame Work

Most manufacturers spec a minimum of 4 to 4.5 inches of solid, unpatched concrete with a rated PSI for anchoring automotive two post lifts, and we won’t deviate from that regardless of how badly a shop wants to skip a core sample. A restoration shop is harder on a slab than a typical bay because the loads shift more — a partial frame on the arms doesn’t sit balanced the way a finished vehicle does, and that puts uneven stress on the anchor bolts over time.

We’ve seen shops with newer 6-inch slabs and in-floor heat where drilling below 5 inches wasn’t allowed, which meant using shorter epoxy anchors rated for that depth instead of longer wedge anchors. If your Dubuque building has an older, thinner slab or any question about a patch job underneath where the lift will sit, we’d rather do a core test before the freight even ships than find out on install day that the anchors won’t hold.

Unloading Day: What Actually Happens With a Semi and a Forklift

On a real delivery, the crated columns are typically banded to a pallet or laid flat depending on the carrier, and the runways ship separately, sometimes on a second skid. A forklift operator needs to know the total crate weight before attempting a lift — guessing at balance point on an 800 to 1,200 lb column crate is how forks end up under-supporting one end. We tell customers to have someone experienced with the forklift present, not just whoever’s free that morning, because these crates don’t handle like a pallet of parts.

If there’s no forklift and no skid steer access, we can sometimes arrange delivery logistics differently, but it adds cost and lead time, and it’s far better to know that weeks ahead rather than the morning the truck shows up. A shop with a gravel lot instead of a paved apron also needs to think about where the forklift can actually maneuver — soft ground under a loaded forklift with a column crate is a real hazard, not a minor inconvenience.

Choosing Two Post Vs. Four Post for Frame and Body Work

Restoration shops ask us constantly whether they should go with automotive two post lifts or a four post instead. For pure metal work — cutting, welding, frame straightening — a two post gives full underbody access that a four post runway simply can’t match, since there’s no runway steel in the way of your work area. That’s usually the deciding factor for shops doing what this Dubuque family garage does.

The tradeoff is that a two post needs solid, adequate-thickness concrete and precise anchor placement, while a four post drive-on can sometimes tolerate a slightly less ideal slab since the load spreads across a longer footprint. If a shop’s slab is questionable and pouring new concrete isn’t in the budget yet, a four post storage lift might be the interim answer while they save for a full two post installation later. We walk through both scenarios honestly rather than pushing whichever unit is easier to sell that week.

Arm Configuration and Reach for Longer Wheelbase Restoration Projects

Classic trucks, longer wheelbase sedans, and project vehicles with modified frames don’t always sit symmetrically on a standard two post arm set. We spec asymmetric columns for most restoration work because the offset column position gives more usable arm swing and keeps the vehicle balanced even when the frame or suspension geometry isn’t stock anymore. Arm reach matters here — a shorter arm set that works fine on a compact car can run out of reach on a longer frame, forcing awkward pad placement that isn’t rated for the load.

We also talk through pad adapters and height extenders early, because restoration vehicles frequently need extra pad height to clear aftermarket exhaust, lowered suspension, or partial disassembly. Ordering the right arm and pad kit with the initial lift purchase saves a second freight shipment later, which matters when you’re already coordinating forklift access and concrete work on a tight schedule.

Warranty, Service, and Long-Term Support After Installation

Once automotive two post lifts are anchored and running, the freight headaches are behind you, but ongoing service still matters, especially for a shop running the equipment daily under heavy loads.
