Automotive two post lifts show up in a lot more RV and trailer service bays than people expect, and a shop we worked with just outside Waterloo is a good example of why. They mostly turn wrenches on tow vehicles and smaller trailers, but transmission service on customer trucks was eating up floor space and bay time on jack stands. A year ago they bought their first two post lift. What we want to walk through here is the whole arc: getting the crate off the truck, getting it into the bay, the install itself, and what changed once they had a real lift under their first transmission job.

Freight day: what actually shows up on the truck

Most people picture a two post lift arriving as one big box. In reality it’s several crates and a couple of loose pallets — columns, overhead assembly if it has one, arms, hydraulic unit, cables, and a bag of hardware. For the Waterloo shop, the freight carrier called ahead asking if there was a dock or a forklift on site, which is the same question we ask every single customer before we schedule a delivery. If there’s no dock and no forklift, the truck either needs a liftgate arranged in advance or the driver will simply refuse to unload it curbside, and then it’s sitting on a flatbed in a parking lot.

This shop had a forklift, which made things easier, but the operator hadn’t moved anything this awkward before. Columns are top-heavy and the pallets aren’t always banded the way you’d expect. We talk customers through this every time we quote a lift: know your dock height, know your forklift’s capacity, and have someone on site who’s comfortable spotting a load that size. It’s a small thing that saves a damaged crate or a hurt employee.

Getting the crates from the dock into the bay

Once freight is off the truck, the next problem is getting heavy, oddly shaped crates from a dock or driveway into the actual service bay without wrecking a doorway or a floor. In this shop’s case the bay door was wide enough, but the turn from the yard into the building was tight, and the forklift had to make a couple of passes with columns tipped at an angle most drivers aren’t used to.
We’ve seen shops try to muscle this with pallet jacks alone, which works for lighter hydraulic units but not for full columns on a heavier-duty two post lift. If you don’t have a forklift, tell us before install day — we can plan around it, but showing up expecting to hand-carry an 800-pound column is not a great surprise for anyone.

For this shop, staging mattered too. Because they work on trucks and trailers with limited bay space, we coordinated to have crates unloaded in an order that kept the drive lane open, so the rest of their shop could keep working while we set up. Little scheduling details like that are part of why we ask so many logistics questions up front instead of just showing up with a truck.

Concrete, clearance, and why we check the floor first

Before any automotive two post lift goes in, we look hard at the floor. Anchoring into old, thin, or cracked slab is the single most common reason an install gets delayed. This particular bay had decent concrete, but it was poured for RV and trailer traffic, not necessarily rated the same way a dedicated automotive bay would be, so we double-checked slab thickness and cure age before setting anchors.

Overhead clearance is the other item that trips people up, especially in buildings originally built for trailers rather than cars. A two post lift with an overhead beam design needs real ceiling height to raise a vehicle fully; a floor-plate or baseplate design sidesteps that if clearance is tight. We walked this shop through both configurations before they ordered anything, because retrofitting clearance after a lift is already anchored is a much worse conversation than having it beforehand.

The install itself: 220V, anchors, and leveling

Assuming clearance and concrete check out, the mechanical part of installing automotive two post lifts is fairly predictable. Columns get set, plumb-checked, anchored, and the overhead or floor connection goes in depending on the model. Arms and cables get attached, the hydraulic unit gets plumbed and bled, and the whole thing gets synchronized so both sides rise and lower together. Cable-and-pulley two post lifts drift out of sync over time if they’re not adjusted correctly at install, which is one of the more common service calls we get on lifts other companies put in.

Power is the other piece people forget. Two post lifts typically need 220V within a reasonable distance of the unit, and while we can wire the lift itself, running new circuits is licensed electrician work. We tell every customer this during the quote stage so it’s not a surprise on install day — nothing stalls a schedule faster than showing up to find there’s no power run to the bay yet.

First real job: transmission service on a customer truck

The shop’s first big test of the new lift was a transmission service on a customer’s pickup — exactly the job that had been living on jack stands for years. With the truck raised on the automotive two post lift, the tech had full access underneath, could position a transmission jack cleanly, and didn’t have to crawl in and out from under a vehicle propped on stands. That alone changed how long the job took and how safe it felt.

What surprised the shop was how much drivetrain work benefits from a two post setup compared to a four post or drive-on lift. With the vehicle’s weight on the frame or pinch welds and the wheels hanging free, there’s nothing blocking access to the transmission pan, crossmember, or driveshaft. For a shop that also handles trailer axle work, having a lift rated correctly for heavier trucks made a real difference versus trying to stretch a lighter-duty setup past its comfort zone.

Cables, arms, and the maintenance nobody thinks about until it’s needed

A year in, this shop’s biggest lesson wasn’t about the install — it was about upkeep. Cables stretch, safety releases need periodic checking, and arm restraints wear from constant repositioning on different vehicle lengths, which matters a lot in a shop handling both trucks and trailers. We keep replacement cables and safety release hardware in stock specifically because these are the parts that fail from normal use, not abuse, and shops don’t always know they need them until a lift feels off.

We recommend an annual inspection on any two post lift getting regular use, and heavier for a shop cycling trucks daily. It’s a short visit that catches worn cables, slow hydraulic drift, or anchor bolts that have loosened, well before they turn into a lift that’s out of sync or, worse, unsafe. For this shop, that first-year inspection is already on the calendar.

What we’d tell any RV or trailer shop before they buy

If you’re running an RV or trailer shop in or around Waterloo and thinking about adding automotive two post lifts, the questions to answer before you order are the same ones we ask every customer: do you have a forklift or dock access, what’s your ceiling height, how old and thick is your slab, and is there 220V nearby. Answering those honestly upfront saves a delayed install and awkward freight day.

Beyond that, think about what you’re actually lifting. A shop doing heavier trucks and trailer work needs a higher-capacity two post lift than a shop focused on light passenger cars, and the arm configuration matters for longer wheelbases. We’d rather spend twenty minutes on the phone figuring out the right model than sell a lift that fights your workload every day for the next decade.
