Start With What You’re Actually Doing on the Lift
Before you fall in love with a specific model, get honest about the work. If oil changes and fluid service are the bulk of your driveway hobby list, you don’t need the biggest capacity two post lift on the market, and you definitely don’t need every accessory in the catalog. A 9,000 to 10,000 lb lift handles the vast majority of daily drivers, half-ton trucks, and SUVs that eastern Nebraska garage owners bring home. If you’re planning to eventually run a 3/4-ton diesel truck up on it, like we’ve seen from customers with heavier work trucks, size up to a 12,000 to 15,000 lb unit from the start rather than buying twice.
We ask every first-time buyer the same questions we’d ask ourselves: what’s the heaviest vehicle you own now, and what’s the heaviest one you might own in five years? Concrete Comes Before the Lift, Not After
This is the single biggest sequencing mistake we see. Two post lifts anchor into the slab, and the anchors need real depth and real cure time in solid concrete to hold safely under load. We’ve had customers call us excited about a lift purchase only to find out their existing slab is old, cracked, or too thin — often 4 inches when the lift manufacturer wants closer to 5 inches or more of solid, unreinforced concrete for the anchor bolts to bite into properly.
If you’re pouring new concrete for a garage build, loop in your installer before the pour, not after. We’ve had jobs where the customer’s own concrete background made this easy — one recent install for a customer who happened to run a concrete company himself had a brand new 6-inch heated floor slab ready to go, which is about as good as it gets for a two post lift install. If you’re not in that position, at minimum get your slab specs to us before you order the lift so we can confirm anchor depth and cure time won’t leave you waiting weeks longer than expected.
Ceiling Height and Bay Width Decide Your Lift Before You Do
We’ve had eastern Nebraska customers with 12-foot ceilings and 5-inch concrete tell us straight up they want a two post lift big enough to run a 3/4-ton diesel truck onto it — and 12 feet is enough clearance for most standard-height two post lifts with a vehicle raised to full height. But plenty of home garages run closer to 9 or 10 feet, and that changes what fits. Measure your actual clear height under any garage door tracks, ductwork, or lighting, not just the ceiling itself.
Bay width matters just as much. Automotive two post lifts need enough width for the columns plus swing-out arms plus room to walk around the vehicle once it’s up. A single-car bay under 12 feet wide gets tight fast once you add a full-size truck and a two post lift’s column footprint. We’d rather tell you now that your garage needs a wider bay or a different lift style than have you discover it after the concrete’s poured and the lift shows up.
Standard Height vs. Low Ceiling Configurations
Most home garage buyers default to a standard height two post lift without knowing there’s a choice. Standard height units are the most common and typically the best value, but if your garage has lower ceilings, or you’re finishing out a pole barn with trusses eating into your clearance, a low-rise or shorter-column configuration can be the difference between a lift that works and one that clips your ceiling with the vehicle at full height.

We’d also point out that garage door height and headroom above the door track often get overlooked — a lift that fits your ceiling doesn’t help if the vehicle can’t clear the door opening on the way in. Walk your own garage with a tape measure before you call, and you’ll have a much faster, more accurate quote conversation.
Power, Air, and the Utilities Nobody Budgets For
Automotive two post lifts need 220-volt power at minimum, and most home garages built decades ago were wired for 110-volt tools and lighting only. If you’re doing a garage buildout from scratch, get an electrician involved early so the circuit is roughed in before drywall goes up, not after. We’ve had installs delayed because the customer assumed their existing outlet would work and it simply wasn’t rated for the power unit.
Beyond electrical, think about lighting placement, floor drain locations if you’re doing fluid service regularly, and where you’ll store fluids, filters, and tools within reach of the lift bay. None of this is complicated, but it’s much cheaper to plan during a buildout than to retrofit around a lift that’s already anchored to the floor. Sequencing your garage buildout means power and utilities get finalized before the slab is poured for the lift footprint, not scrambled together after delivery.
Lead Time Is Longer Than You Think — Plan Around It
First-time buyers often assume they can order a lift and have it installed within a week or two. In reality, lead times on automotive two post lifts fluctuate with manufacturer supply, and popular configurations can run several weeks out before delivery, sometimes longer during busy seasons. If you’re not in a hurry, that’s fine — plenty of our customers order well ahead of when they actually need the lift and let the timeline work itself out around their broader garage build.
But if your buildout has a hard deadline — a home closing, a contractor’s schedule, a concrete crew booked for a specific week — get your lift order in early and ask directly about current lead time before you finalize your buildout calendar. We’d rather tell you honestly that a model is six weeks out than have you plan a garage completion date around a lift that hasn’t shipped yet.
Installation Day: What Actually Happens
Once your slab has cured and your lift has arrived, installation of automotive two post lifts is typically a one-day job for a standard home garage configuration, assuming clear access and no surprises with the concrete. Our crew levels the columns, sets anchors, runs the hydraulic and electrical connections, and tests the lift through a full cycle before we leave. For alignment-capable four post configurations we grout after transit leveling, but for a standard two post home garage lift that step usually isn’t needed.
