We get calls almost every week from shop owners who assume automotive two post lifts are the last thing you install once the walls are up and the sign is hung out front. That’s backwards, and it’s the single most expensive mistake we see in new EV restoration and metal work shops along the Iowa-Nebraska border. We recently worked with an EV specialty shop owner expanding into a second bay who had already poured concrete, run overhead power for welders, and picked out cabinet layouts before ever calling us about a lift. By then, some of his options were already off the table. Sequencing matters, and it matters most when your work involves battery packs, aluminum panels, and frame precision.

The Myth: “Lifts Come After the Building Is Finished”

This is the myth we spend the most time correcting. Shop owners treat automotive two post lifts like a piece of furniture you drop in once construction wraps up, similar to a tool cabinet or a parts washer. In reality, a two post lift is a structural fixture. It bolts into the slab, it needs specific concrete thickness and cure time, and its anchor pattern has to be planned before the pour, not after. We’ve had customers call us after the concrete was already down, hoping we could just core-drill and go, only to find out the slab was 4 inches thick when a 10,000 lb lift needed 5.5 to 6 inches minimum.

EV and restoration work makes this worse because the vehicles are heavier and the work is more precise. A frame-off restoration or battery pack swap needs a stable, correctly rated lift, not a compromise made because the building was already finished. If you’re sequencing a buildout, the lift decision belongs in the same conversation as the slab design, not six months after it.

Myth: Any Concrete Slab Will Hold Automotive Two Post Lifts

We hear this constantly, and it’s one of the fastest ways to end up with a lift that fails inspection or, worse, fails in use. Concrete thickness and rebar placement matter a lot more for a 10k or 12k lift than most people assume. One Ames-area customer building a home shop specifically asked us about 5.5 to 6 inch slab depth for a 10k two post, and that’s roughly the right range for that capacity. Go thinner and you’re gambling with anchor pull-out under load, especially with EV battery packs pushing higher gross weights than a comparable gas vehicle.

We also get calls from shops that already poured and are now asking if rebar matters, or if infloor heat changes anything. It does. Infloor heat lines and anchor bolt patterns can conflict, and if nobody mapped it out before the pour, you’re stuck working around it after the fact. Our advice every time: get us your ceiling height, your planned slab thickness, and your target lift capacity before the concrete truck shows up. It costs nothing to ask and it saves you from cutting into finished concrete later.

Myth: EV Work Doesn’t Change Which Lift You Need

Plenty of shop owners assume a standard two post lift works fine for EV vehicles because it’s still just holding up a car. It’s not that simple. EV platforms often have battery packs mounted low and wide across the frame, and standard arm configurations and lift points don’t always line up the way they do on an internal combustion vehicle. The EV adapters aren’t an accessory you can skip.

For a shop doing genuine restoration and metal work on EVs, we’d steer you toward the higher-capacity EV-configured models over a standard unit, even if the vehicle weight looks similar on paper. Battery pack placement changes how weight transfers through the arms, and getting that wrong isn’t a small issue. If your buildout includes EV work now or down the road, plan the lift spec around it from day one instead of retrofitting later.

Sequencing Order That Actually Works

Here’s the order we recommend, and it’s the opposite of what most people do on their own. First, nail down your vehicle mix and target lift capacity, because that decides slab thickness. Second, finalize ceiling height and bay footprint, since a two post lift needs clearance for full rise and arm swing, and cramped bays cause headaches later. Third, pour concrete to spec with the lift’s anchor pattern and rebar clearance already mapped. Fourth, install the lift. Fifth, run your electrical and air lines around the lift’s footprint, not before it.

We’ve installed for shop owners who did this in reverse and had to relocate outlets or reroute compressed air lines because the lift ended up needing space they’d already used for something else. That’s an avoidable cost. When we quote automotive two post lifts for a new build, we ask about forklift access on-site, whether there’s a pit, and delivery lead time right alongside the technical specs, because all of it affects how the buildout timeline should run. Get the sequence right once and you never think about it again.

Myth: Used Lifts Are Always a Compromise for a Serious Shop

We sell plenty of used two post lifts, and we don’t think that’s a downgrade for a restoration or metal shop watching its budget during a buildout. A well-maintained used lift with good cables and functioning safety latches can carry EV and restoration work just fine. What matters is inspection, not age. We’ve had repeat customers ask us for pricing on used two post inventory specifically because they’re adding a second bay and don’t need brand-new for the first year of operation.

The mistake is buying a used lift sight unseen without checking cylinder condition, cable fray, and latch function. We’ve serviced two post lifts with leaking cylinders and frayed cables that were sold as “working fine” by a previous owner. If you’re going the used route for your buildout, have someone inspect it before it goes in the slab plan, not after installation when a problem is far more expensive to fix.

Myth: Lift Inspections Are Optional Once Installed

A lot of shop owners we talk to genuinely don’t know that lift inspections are an annual expectation, not a one-time event at install. We’ve had customers ask directly whether inspections are something they’re supposed to schedule every year, and the honest answer is yes, especially for a shop running EV and restoration work where the lift sees heavy, awkward loads daily. Skipping inspections doesn’t save money long-term; it just moves the cost to whenever a cable or latch finally fails.

For a new buildout, we recommend baking your first annual inspection into your calendar the same week you schedule the install. It’s a small habit that keeps automotive two post lifts running safely for years and keeps you compliant if you ever need documentation for insurance or a landlord. Shops that treat inspection as routine maintenance, not a hassle, get far more service life out of their equipment.

Myth: One Two Post Lift Covers a Growing Shop’s Needs

We regularly work with shops that started with a single two post lift and outgrew it within a year or two, especially once EV and restoration work picked up. If you’re sequencing a buildout along the Iowa-Nebraska border where shop space is often more available than in denser metro areas, it’s worth planning for a second bay and a second lift from the start, even if you only install one now. Think about your realistic five-year vehicle volume, not just this year’s schedule. A shop doing serious EV and restoration metal work tends to need more lift capacity sooner than owners expect, because the work itself is slower per vehicle and ties up a bay longer. Planning your buildout sequence with room for growth costs little now and saves a lot of disruption later.
