Automotive two post lifts are usually the first big equipment decision a restoration shop owner makes, and it’s the one that determines whether every other decision in the build-out goes smoothly or turns into a redo. We’ve walked through this with a lot of shop owners around West Des Moines who are converting a pole barn, a leased industrial unit, or a from-scratch metal building into a real restoration bay. The order matters: budget first, then floor and power, then configuration, then the actual lift model. Skip a step and you end up with a lift that doesn’t fit the bay, or a bay that can’t support the lift you already bought.

Step One: Start With a Real Budget Number, Not a Wish List

Every restoration shop build-out we’ve helped with in central Iowa starts the same way: someone calls with a Pinterest-board idea of what they want and a budget that was set before they priced concrete, power, or freight. Automotive two post lifts range widely depending on capacity, drive-through versus overhead, and control style, and the lift itself is often not even the biggest line item once you add pad prep, electrical runs, and delivery logistics. We tell shop owners to set the number first, then work backward.

A realistic budget conversation includes the lift, installation labor, any concrete work if your slab isn’t rated for anchor loads, and a contingency for surprises like an unlevel floor or a service panel that needs an upgrade. Restoration work on classic cars and trucks often means longer dwell times on the lift for metal work, so we also ask shops to budget for a second lift sooner than they think they’ll need one. Getting the number honest up front saves a lot of frustration three weeks into the project when the quote for automotive two post lifts comes in and it’s the concrete, not the lift, that blew the budget.

Step Two: Confirm Your Floor Can Actually Carry the Load

Before we talk models, we talk concrete. Two post lifts anchor into the slab, and the slab has to be rated for the anchor pull-out specs the manufacturer requires. Older pole barns and converted ag buildings in the West Des Moines area frequently have thinner or underspec’d concrete that was never poured with a lift in mind. We’ve had shop owners assume their 5-inch slab is fine, only to find out during a site visit that it’s closer to 4 inches with light rebar, which changes the anchoring plan entirely.

If you’re pouring new concrete as part of the build-out, this is the point to loop in your lift installer, not after the pour. We can give you slab thickness and cure-time specs before the concrete truck shows up, which is a lot cheaper than saw-cutting and patching later. If you’re working with existing concrete, we do a site assessment and tell you straight whether it will hold, whether it needs reinforcement, or whether the lift location needs to move. This step alone determines where in the building your bays can go, so it has to happen before you finalize the floor plan drawings.

Step Three: Map Ceiling Height and Door Clearance

Restoration work often involves trucks, vans, or project vehicles with roof racks, ladder racks, or lift kits, and that changes your overhead clearance math. We ask every shop owner for their tallest anticipated vehicle before we recommend a configuration. A two post lift with a raised vehicle needs several feet of clearance above the roofline, and if your building has a lower eave line or exposed trusses, that can rule out certain bays entirely.

Garage door height matters just as much. If the plan includes a vehicle that needs to drive in with a roof-mounted anything, or a lift stacked scenario down the road, you need to know the door opening before you frame it, not after. We’ve seen shops frame out a beautiful cathedral ceiling with an angled door track specifically to accommodate taller vehicles, and that kind of planning has to happen at the framing stage, alongside the decision on where the lifts themselves will sit relative to the door swing and drive lane.

Step Four: Decide Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Configuration for Your Work

This is where automotive two post lifts start to diverge by use case. Symmetric configurations center the vehicle between the columns and are common for general service and tire work. Asymmetric configurations offset the columns to open up door swing and give techs more room to work around the vehicle, which restoration and metal shops often prefer because you’re accessing panels, fenders, and rockers for extended periods, not just spinning a wheel and moving on.

We’ve installed both for shops doing the same type of work, and the right call depends on your specific bay width and what kind of access you need most. If you’re doing rocker panel replacement or full frame work, asymmetric columns give you more clearance to swing doors fully open and get a cart or welding cable in close. If your bay is narrow, symmetric may be the only configuration that physically fits without the columns crowding your walkway. We walk through this with a tape measure on-site rather than guessing from a floor plan drawing, because a few inches of column offset changes everything about workflow.

Step Five: Match Capacity to What You’ll Actually Lift

Restoration shops sometimes underestimate capacity needs because a lot of classic cars are lighter than modern trucks. But if your shop plan includes any late-model trucks, dually pickups, or vehicles with aftermarket armor and winches, you need to size for that, not just the vintage muscle car sitting in the bay today. We generally recommend building in headroom above your heaviest current project vehicle rather than sizing to the exact number, because shop work tends to expand into heavier vehicles over time.

We also ask about lift point access on the vehicles you restore most. Some frame-off restoration projects need a lift with adapters or extended arms to reach factory lift points once the body is off the frame, and that’s a conversation worth having before you buy rather than after the lift arrives and the arms don’t reach. Getting capacity and reach right the first time avoids the expensive mistake of buying a second lift a year later because the first one can’t handle the shop’s actual project mix.

Step Six: Sequence Electrical and Power Runs With the Install, Not After

Two post lifts need dedicated power, and the run has to be planned before drywall or interior finishing goes in, not after. We coordinate with electricians on-site regularly, and the shops that go smoothest are the ones where the electrical rough-in happens with the lift’s exact power requirements already known. Voltage, amperage, and disconnect location vary by lift model, so this step has to follow the model selection, not precede it.

We also flag air line and compressor placement at this stage, since restoration bays often run air tools continuously and the compressor location affects both noise and hose routing around the lift columns. Getting power and air sequenced correctly before the walls close up saves a shop owner from chasing conduit through finished walls later, which is a fix nobody wants to schedule once the shop is open and booking work.

Step Seven: Schedule Delivery and Install Around Your Bay Readiness

The last step is logistics, and it trips up more build-outs than people expect. We ask every shop the same questions before scheduling delivery: is there a forklift on-site, is the bay slab cured and ready for anchoring, and is there clear access for a truck to unload columns and crossmembers without navigating tight turns. A lift showing up before the concrete is cured, or before the bay is cleared of construction debris, just means it sits in a crate taking up space you need for other trades.

We schedule install after confirming concrete cure time, clear floor access, and that power is roughed in and ready for final connection. For shops doing a phased build-out, we’ve sequenced install so one bay comes online while framing continues in the next, letting a shop start booking restoration work months earlier than waiting for the entire building to be finished. That kind of phased sequencing is often the difference between a shop opening on schedule and one that sits idle waiting on a single missed step in the plan.
