We got a call a while back from a shop owner outside Sioux City who was building out a bay specifically for EV service work — battery pack drops, oil pan gasket jobs on the range-extender models some of his customers still ran, and general diagnostic lifts. He’d already poured his concrete, wired his panel for the equipment he thought he needed, and framed in his walls before he ever called us about automotive two post lifts. That’s backwards, and it’s the single most common mistake we see when a new or expanding shop tries to sequence a garage build-out. Getting the order right saves thousands and weeks of rework.

Myth: You Can Design the Building Around the Lift Later

This is the myth that bites hardest, and it’s the one our Sioux City caller ran into. He assumed any automotive two post lifts model would drop into whatever slab and ceiling height he’d already built. In reality, a two-post asymmetric lift needs a specific column spread, a specific minimum ceiling height for full rise, and floor anchoring rated for the concrete thickness he actually poured — not the thickness he guessed at. For EV work specifically, you also need to account for the extra swing clearance around the columns when you’re maneuvering a battery pack or a low-clearance rolling jack under the vehicle for pan gasket access.

We ask every caller the same questions we’d ask on a lead sheet: how thick is the slab, is there rebar or mesh, is there in-floor heat, and where does the epoxy anchor pattern need to land relative to your bay doors. If you build the shell first and guess at those numbers, you end up coring through mesh you didn’t know was there, or worse, discovering your ceiling height won’t clear full extension on the model you already ordered.

Myth: Any Concrete Slab Will Hold Any Lift

We’ve walked into new shops with six inches of concrete and in-floor heat, and we’ve walked into others with barely four inches and no rebar. Both can work, but only if the anchor bolt epoxy pattern and drilling depth are matched to what’s actually there. On one recent install we specified 4.5-inch anchor bolt epoxy because the shop couldn’t drill below five inches without hitting the heat lines. That’s not a detail you want to discover after the lift is on site and your tech is standing there with a hammer drill.

For an EV specialty shop doing oil pan gasket work and pack service side by side, we usually recommend confirming slab spec with your installer before the pour, not after. If you’re retrofitting an existing building, we send a tech out to verify thickness and reinforcement before we ever quote hardware. It’s a five-minute check that prevents a callback three weeks into your build-out.

Myth: Power and Air Get Figured Out After Framing

Electricians love to ask us where the lift motor needs power, and we love it when they ask before the walls go up instead of after. Automotive two post lifts typically run on a dedicated circuit sized to the motor, and if you’re running rolling jacks or an air-actuated locking system alongside the lift for EV pack work, you need compressed air routed to that bay too. We’ve had customers ask for pricing on rolling bridge jacks that sit between the runways specifically so they can raise a vehicle even higher for under-pan access — that’s an accessory decision that affects your air drop location, and it needs to happen during rough-in, not after drywall.

Myth: Delivery Logistics Are an Afterthought

A two-post lift and its columns are heavy, and getting them off a truck without a forklift or skid steer on site turns a same-day install into a multi-day headache. We ask this on every single quote call: do you have a forklift, or does a neighbor have a skid steer we can borrow for offload? One Adel shop had a neighbor with a skid steer they used for exactly this, and it saved everyone a rental fee. If your Sioux City bay is tucked behind a tight drive or a narrow overhead door, tell us that during the quote stage, not the week the freight truck shows up.

We also need to know if your building is receiving-dock accessible or if the truck has to back down a residential-style driveway. These logistics decisions belong in your build-out sequence right after slab and power, well before you’re picking paint colors for the bay walls.

Myth: EV Work Doesn’t Change What Lift You Need

Some shop owners assume that because EVs don’t have an oil pan in the traditional sense, they don’t need to think hard about lift configuration. But most EV specialty shops we work with in Iowa still service hybrid and range-extender vehicles that do have pan gasket work, plus they’re doing suspension, brake, and tire work on pure EVs constantly. The arm reach and lift point configuration on automotive two post lifts matters more with EV pack weight distributed differently than a traditional engine-transmission layout. Get your arm and pad configuration matched to the vehicle mix you actually see, not a generic setup.

We’ve quoted shops that wanted both a standard asymmetric lift for general service and a second lift with reinforced arms for heavier EV platforms. Sequencing that decision early means your electrical and slab work supports both units instead of forcing a retrofit later.

Myth: You Should Order the Lift Before Finalizing Layout

We get it — you want to lock in your equipment and start the clock on lead time. But ordering automotive two post lifts before your bay layout is finalized is how shops end up with columns that block a door swing or a runway that doesn’t leave clearance for a rolling jack. Walk your layout with tape on the floor first. Mark where the columns land, where the vehicle nose sits, and where your tech needs to stand for pan gasket removal or pack service.

Once that’s confirmed, we can finalize the quote and get you an accurate lead time instead of a guess. This single step — mocking up the layout before committing to an order — is the difference between a build-out that flows and one that fights you every day.

Getting the Sequence Right From the Start

The correct order, in our experience across every Iowa build-out we’ve touched, is: confirm vehicle mix and lift configuration, verify or specify slab and anchoring, coordinate power and air with your contractor, mock up bay layout with tape, confirm delivery logistics, then place the order. Skip a step and you’re paying for it later in coring, rewiring, or a lift that doesn’t fit the bay you built. Automotive two post lifts are a long-term investment — most shops run the same unit for well over a decade — so a few extra weeks of planning up front is nothing compared to fixing a sequencing mistake after the concrete is cured.
