Why Sequencing Matters Before You Buy Automotive Two Post Lifts

We’ve had homeowners call us after their garage slab was already poured at standard 4-inch thickness, only to learn a 10,000 lb capacity lift needs deeper concrete with rebar to anchor safely. That’s a hard conversation to have after the fact, because breaking out and repouring concrete costs more than most people spent on the lift itself. If you know automotive two post lifts are in your future, tell your concrete contractor before the pour, not after.

The other piece people miss is ceiling height. A typical two post lift needs somewhere around 12 feet of clearance to fully raise a vehicle, and if you’re planning a pickup or a taller SUV for those annual inspections, you want breathing room above that. We had a customer near Waukee looking at a 10k lift with 16-18 foot ceilings, which is more than plenty, but plenty of northeast Iowa garages get built with 9 or 10 foot trusses because nobody thought about a lift when they were drawing plans. Sequence your ceiling height and your concrete spec around the lift, not the other way around.

Concrete and Anchoring Specs You Need Before the Pour

For most automotive two post lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range, you’re looking at a minimum of 4 inches of cured concrete, but we generally recommend 6 inches with rebar reinforcement for anything you plan to use regularly for inspections, oil changes, and heavier trucks. Cure time matters too — new concrete needs to sit for the full 28 days before you drop anchors and load a vehicle onto the lift, so don’t schedule your install the week after the pour.

We also ask every home garage customer whether they’re doing a symmetric or asymmetric lift configuration, because that decision affects door swing clearance and how you’ll walk around the vehicle during an inspection. Some buyers aren’t sure which they want and end up looking at convertible designs that switch between the two configurations. If you’re not sure, that’s a completely normal place to be — just don’t pour concrete and frame your bay width before that decision is made, because anchor bolt patterns and column spacing are fixed once the slab cures.

Sizing the Lift to Your Vehicles and Your Inspection Routine

If your annual state inspection routine involves a daily driver sedan, most 9,000 lb two post lifts handle that easily. But a lot of northeast Iowa garages also have a three-quarter-ton or one-ton diesel truck sitting in the driveway, and that changes the math fast. We regularly get asked what capacity rating covers a heavier truck, and the honest answer is you want headroom above the truck’s actual weight, not a lift rated right at the edge.

Automotive two post lifts also vary in drive-on plate height once fully raised, and for inspection work you want enough clearance underneath to get a creeper or your body comfortably under the vehicle to check brake lines, exhaust, and suspension components. Depending on the model, that drive-on height at max lift is often in the range of six to seven feet, which gives you standing room to inspect from below. If you’re buying specifically to handle your own state inspections at home, tell us that upfront so we can steer you toward a configuration with the arm reach and lift height that actually works for underbody access.

Electrical and Utility Planning During the Build

Two post lifts need dedicated electrical service, and running that wire is far easier during framing than after drywall goes up. Most residential lifts run on standard 220V single phase circuits, but you want to confirm amperage requirements with the specific model you’re buying before your electrician finalizes the panel. We’ve seen garages get finished with a single 110V outlet near the lift bay, and then the customer has to open up a wall to add proper service.

Compressed air is another utility people forget. If you’re planning to use air tools for tire work or your own inspections, running an air line to the lift bay during construction saves you from snaking hose across the floor later. Floor drains, lighting placement directly above the lift columns, and even where your workbench sits relative to the lift arms are all decisions that are nearly free to make during framing and expensive to fix afterward. Plan the utility rough-in around where the lift columns will actually sit, using the specific footprint from your quote, not a guess.

Freight, Forklifts, and Install Day Logistics

Once the garage is framed and the concrete has cured, the next sequencing question is delivery. Two post lift columns and crossbeams are heavy, and freight carriers typically expect a forklift on site to unload, or they’ll charge extra for a liftgate delivery. If you don’t have a forklift, tell us during the quote process so we can plan around it — this is one of the most common install-day surprises we run into with home garage customers.

We also ask about site access before we schedule install: is there a step up into the garage, is the driveway wide enough for a delivery truck, and is there a clear path from the driveway to the bay. None of this is complicated, but it’s the kind of thing that turns a half-day install into a full-day install if nobody thought about it ahead of time. Lead times on automotive two post lifts can run several weeks depending on the model, so build that into your overall garage timeline rather than assuming the lift will just show up whenever the rest of the build finishes.

Warranty, Oil, and What Comes With the Lift

Most of the two post lifts we stock come with a multi-year parts and labor warranty, and many carriers also back their equipment with a return policy if you’re not satisfied within the first month. That’s worth confirming before you buy, especially for a first-time purchase where you’re not entirely sure yet what features matter to you in daily use. We also get asked constantly whether hydraulic oil is included — sometimes it is, sometimes you need to add it separately, so ask that specific question when you get your quote so it’s not a surprise on install day.

Arm configuration is another detail worth nailing down before you buy. Three-stage arms give you more reach for a wider range of vehicle types, which matters if your household has both a small car and a full-size truck that both need to go up on the same lift for inspections. Ask what’s included versus what’s an add-on, because two quotes that look similar on price can differ a lot in what actually shows up on your truck.

Getting the Install Scheduled and Ready for Inspection Season

Once your garage shell, concrete, and utilities are ready, scheduling the actual install of automotive two post lifts is usually the fastest part of the whole process. We coordinate delivery timing with our install crew so the lift doesn’t sit in your garage for weeks before we get out to set it. If you’re targeting a specific date — say, ahead of when your vehicle registration renewal and inspection window comes up — tell us that date when you request your quote so we can work backward from it.

We also recommend getting a walkthrough with your installer before the crew arrives, confirming column spacing, anchor locations, and where the power drop lands relative to the lift’s control box. A lift that’s installed correctly the first time, with proper anchoring and clearance, is one you’ll use confidently for inspections and repairs for years. Rushing that last step after months of careful sequencing is the one mistake we see even well-planned northeast Iowa garage builds make.
