A pair of jack stands works, but it’s slow, it’s less stable, and it limits how you can move around the vehicle. A lot of weekend mechanics start with a daily driver sedan and end up with a project truck or a diesel a few years later, and by then the lift is already bolted to the floor. A 9,000 lb or 10,000 lb capacity two post lift covers almost anything a hobbyist garage will ever see, including full-size trucks and SUVs with aftermarket bumpers and winches.

Don’t undersize just to save money upfront. What matters more day to day is the rise height, the lifting height at full extension, and whether the arms are two-stage or three-stage. Concrete Thickness and Anchoring

Every two post lift bolts into the slab, and the anchors are only as good as the concrete underneath them.
