The biggest misconception we hear is that symmetric and asymmetric arm designs are interchangeable, or that one is simply an upgrade over the other. They are not competing tiers of quality — they solve different problems. A symmetric lift centers the vehicle directly between the columns, which keeps weight distribution even and predictable. That matters more than people think with EVs, where battery packs sit low and heavy along the centerline. An asymmetric lift rotates the arms to swing the vehicle’s front end away from the columns, opening up door clearance and giving techs more room to work around the front fenders and wheel wells.

For a shop doing straight annual state inspections, that difference is not cosmetic. The arm design is about geometry and access, not strength. When Symmetric Still Makes Sense

We are not saying asymmetric wins every time. Shops that run a tight, consistent lineup of similar-sized vehicles, or that use the lift mainly for alignment work rather than general inspection and repair, often do better with a symmetric setup. Alignment specifically benefits from the vehicle being dead-centered between the columns because it keeps the wheel geometry consistent bay to bay. If your central Iowa shop is doing alignment checks as part of your inspection process alongside underbody work, a symmetric lift keeps that part of the job cleaner.

Cost is also a factor worth being honest about. Symmetric lifts are generally simpler in arm design and can come in slightly less expensive depending on the model and capacity. If your shop’s inspection volume is lower, or you are running a single bay that handles a bit of everything, a well-chosen symmetric configuration in a mid-rise capacity might serve you just as well without paying for features your workflow won’t use. We always ask what a shop actually does day to day before recommending a configuration — the answer changes more often than people expect.

EV-Specific Weight and Pad Height Considerations

Beyond arm symmetry, EVs bring another wrinkle that a lot of shops overlook when they spec automotive two post lifts: pad height and lift point clearance. Battery enclosures sit lower than a traditional engine cradle, and the approved lift points on many EVs are narrower and more specific than on a gas vehicle. That means your arm reach and pad height adjustment range matter as much as the symmetric-versus-asymmetric decision. A lift with limited pad height adjustment can leave you straining to find safe contact points on certain EV models, which turns a routine inspection into a slow, careful process every time.

We recommend shops doing regular EV inspection work look at adapter pads designed for lower-profile lift points, and confirm the arm’s low-pad height clearance before locking in a lift purchase. This is a case where talking through your actual vehicle mix with an installer before the order goes in saves a lot of frustration later. We have swapped pad adapters and rebuilt cylinders on lifts that were never speced correctly for the vehicles a shop ended up running through them, and it is a far easier fix to make on paper before installation than after.

Installation, Concrete, and Bay Layout in Central Iowa

Every install conversation we have starts with the same basic questions: is there a pit, what does the concrete look like, and is there a forklift on site for unloading. Cables stretch, hydraulic lines develop leaks, and locking mechanisms can start sticking or catching if they are not lubricated on schedule. We have gone back into shops where a locking pawl was catching intermittently, and a straightforward lube and adjustment cleared it right up — but that only happens if someone catches it before it becomes a bigger issue during an actual inspection cycle.
