Automotive two post lifts come in two arm geometries, and picking the wrong one will cost a dealership service department real money in comebacks and cycle time. We got a call recently from a service manager at a dealership near Ames who was building out a new alignment bay and wanted to know, flat out, whether he needed symmetric or asymmetric arms for the alignment rack he was planning to run. That question comes up more than people expect, and the answer isn’t the same for every shop. As an Iowa-based installer and parts supplier, we’ve set up both configurations for dealerships doing high-volume alignment work, and the geometry decision matters more than most buyers realize before they sign off on a quote.

Symmetric Arms: What They’re Actually Good For

A symmetric two post lift centers the vehicle directly between the columns, with the arms splitting the load evenly front to back relative to the posts. That geometry was designed decades ago for general service work — oil changes, brake jobs, exhaust — where you want the car balanced and don’t need door swing clearance. The problem for alignment bays is that symmetric lifts put the columns closer to the vehicle’s front and rear pinch points, which can interfere with turn plates and slip plates mounted on the runways, and it makes it harder to get a technician and their equipment around an open door without bumping a post.

We still install symmetric lifts for dealerships, but almost never for a dedicated alignment rack. Where symmetric geometry earns its keep is in a straight service bay doing tire rotations, fluid work, and general diagnostics where door access isn’t the priority and floor space is tight. If a dealership service manager is running one lift for mixed-use work — some alignment, mostly general repair — a symmetric configuration can still make sense, especially on a 9,000 lb capacity lift working on lighter trucks and passenger cars. But for a bay built around alignment volume, we steer customers toward asymmetric geometry almost every time, and we’ll explain exactly why below.

Asymmetric Arms and Why Alignment Bays Need Them

Asymmetric two post lifts shift the columns further back and offset the arm geometry, roughly a 30/70 split front to rear, so the vehicle’s center of gravity sits closer to the rear posts. That does two things a dealership alignment bay needs. First, it opens up unobstructed door swing on the driver’s side, which matters when a technician is getting in and out of the vehicle repeatedly to check steering wheel position and run the alignment software. Second, it clears the front runway area so turn plates and slip plates have room to seat properly without a post or arm blocking the geometry the alignment rack needs to read accurately.

On a typical asymmetric configuration we install, you’re looking at roughly 12 feet of overall width between posts with the columns set back, versus a tighter symmetric footprint. That extra setback is exactly why we tell customers building an alignment bay to plan the concrete layout around asymmetric geometry from day one — retrofitting arm swing clearance after the pad is poured is a much bigger job than getting it right up front. We’ve had customers ask us for exact post-to-wall and post-to-post dimensions before they pour, and that’s the right move; get us the alignment rack’s footprint specs and we’ll lay out the pad dimensions before anyone breaks ground.

Real Dimensions: Post Spacing and Runway Clearance

For a 9,000 to 10,000 lb capacity asymmetric two post lift built for alignment work, expect overall width in the 130 to 145 inch range depending on brand, with clear width between posts commonly landing in the 90s of inches — enough for most full-size trucks and SUVs. Runway length typically runs 70 to 78 inches, and you need to check that against your alignment rack’s turn plate cutouts before finalizing placement, because the runway and the rack have to line up without the post interfering with the plate’s rotation.

Overhead clearance is the other number dealership service managers forget to check. A two post lift with the arms fully raised for a lifted truck can need 12 feet or more of ceiling height, and if you’re adding LED fixtures or overhead reels, that number changes. We had a shop owner ask us for floor layout dimensions, post-to-wall spacing, and even 220V wiring location before pouring concrete — that’s exactly the right sequence, because moving a post location or a control joint after the pad is set means jackhammering. Rated Capacity and How It Interacts With Arm Geometry

Capacity and arm geometry aren’t separate decisions — they compound. A 9,000 lb symmetric lift and a 9,000 lb asymmetric lift carry the same rated weight, but the asymmetric lift’s offset arms change where that weight sits relative to the columns, which is part of why asymmetric lifts often list slightly different clear height and reach specs even at the same tonnage. For dealerships lifting full-size trucks, three-quarter-ton pickups, or SUVs regularly for alignment checks, we generally recommend stepping up to a 10,000 to 12,000 lb capacity lift rather than running right at the edge of a 9,000 lb rating, because alignment work often means the vehicle sits raised for extended periods while a technician makes adjustments, not just a quick five-minute lift and lower.

We’ve also seen dealership techs try to force a lighter-duty lift into heavy alignment rotation because it was already on the floor, and that’s where problems start — arm sag, slower cycle times, and more wear on the hydraulic system. If your alignment bay sees daily use across a mixed fleet of sedans and trucks, size the lift for the heaviest vehicle you regularly service, not the average one.

Arm Reach and Lift Points on Modern Vehicles

Modern trucks and SUVs have lift points that have moved and multiplied compared to ten years ago, especially with underbody battery packs and structural changes on newer platforms. Asymmetric arm sets need enough reach to get under those factory lift points without the arm angle fighting the vehicle’s frame, and short arms that worked fine on older sedans can come up short — literally — on a newer full-size truck. We check arm reach specs against the actual fleet a dealership services before recommending a specific lift, because a lift that’s perfect for compact cars can be the wrong choice for a lot that turns over full-size trucks for alignment and suspension work.

This is also where brand matters. Getting the arm reach right the first time saves technicians from awkward positioning that slows down alignment checks and increases the odds of a lift point getting missed.

Concrete, Anchoring, and Getting the Install Right the First Time

Every automotive two post lift install lives or dies on the concrete underneath it. For alignment bays specifically, we need to know slab thickness, cure time, and whether there’s an existing control joint anywhere near the planned post locations, because a joint too close to an anchor bolt pattern is a real problem. We’ve had customers ask us directly for post locations before the concrete gets poured specifically so they can avoid cutting a control joint right where an anchor needs to go — that’s the right instinct, and it’s a conversation we have with almost every dealership building a new bay.

We also plan 220V power routing and overhead lighting clearance at the same stage, because moving electrical after the fact in a finished bay is a bigger headache than running conduit before drywall goes up. Maintenance and Safety Checks Specific to Alignment Use

Two post lifts running alignment duty cycle more often than a general service bay lift, since technicians raise and lower the vehicle repeatedly during a single alignment job to check ride height, torque suspension bolts, and verify readings. That extra cycling puts more wear on the safety locks, hydraulic pump, and arm restraint pins than a lift doing a handful of daily service raises. We’ve been called out to shops with a two post lift bouncing on the way up or down, and a safety switch not engaging correctly — both are things that get worse, not better, if you keep running the lift instead of scheduling a service call.

For dealership service managers, we recommend a documented monthly check on arm restraint engagement, locking pawl function, and hydraulic fluid level, especially on lifts running heavy alignment rotation.
