We got a call a while back from a third-generation family garage outside Cedar Rapids that stores customer convertibles, classic trucks, and lake boats over the winter on a pair of older two post lifts. Grandpa bought the lifts in the 1990s, dad ran the shop through the 2000s, and now the grandson is the one calling us asking why one column is dropping half an inch faster than the other. The answer, almost every time, is cable wear — and it’s exactly why cable inspection matters so much on any lift that sits loaded for months at a stretch.

Why Cedar Rapids Storage Shops See Faster Cable Wear

Seasonal storage is harder on automotive two post lifts than daily service work, even though that sounds backwards. A car going up and down twenty times a day gets its cables cycled and lightly re-tensioned by use. A car parked at full height for four or five months of an Iowa winter puts constant, unchanging load on one section of cable, at one groove position, with zero movement to redistribute wear. Add in the temperature swings of an unheated Cedar Rapids storage bay — cables contracting in January cold, then flexing again when a customer pulls a car in March — and you get accelerated fatigue right at the point of highest tension.

The family shop we mentioned runs two older asymmetric two post lifts, each rated for typical passenger and light truck weight, with four equalizer cables (two per side) tying the carriages together. Because they load vehicles seasonally and leave them sitting, we recommended they move their cable inspection interval from the standard annual check to twice a year — once before winter storage begins and once before spring pickups start. That single change catches wear while it’s still cosmetic instead of structural.

Cable Dimensions and Specs That Actually Matter

When we’re quoting a cable replacement, the numbers we need are diameter, strand construction, and overall length end to end, including the swaged fitting. Most automotive two post lifts in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb class run cables somewhere in the 5/16 inch to 3/8 inch diameter range, typically 7×19 construction for flexibility around the sheaves. Get the diameter wrong by even a sixteenth of an inch and the cable won’t seat correctly in the sheave groove — it’ll ride high, wear unevenly, and throw off equalization between the two columns.

Length matters just as much. A cable cut a half inch short won’t reach the anchor point under full extension; one that’s too long won’t tension properly no matter how you adjust the equalizer nut. We measure off the old cable whenever possible, or we pull the lift’s model and serial plate and match it against the manufacturer’s parts breakdown. On the Cedar Rapids job, both lifts were old enough that the nameplates had faded, so we cross-referenced column height and base spacing to identify the correct cable kit before ordering.

What Worn Cable Actually Looks Like on the Lift

Fraying is the obvious sign — individual strands popping out of the weave, sometimes catching a shop rag or a bare hand. But the wear that worries us more is the kind you can’t see from six feet away: grooving inside the cable where individual strands have flattened against each other, or a section of cable that’s visibly thinner in diameter than the rest of the run. That thinning means the cable has stretched under sustained load, exactly the kind of load a car parked in storage for months puts on it.

On uneven carriages — one side noticeably lower than the other when the lift is raised — the cable on the low side has almost always stretched more than its partner. We see this constantly on automotive two post lifts that store vehicles seasonally, because the load never shifts to even out the stretch. Rust at the cable ends, especially where the cable meets the swaged stud, is another red flag, particularly common in Iowa shops that don’t run climate control through the winter months.

Setting a Realistic Replacement Interval

Manufacturers generally spec cable inspection at every 90 days of regular commercial use, but that number assumes daily cycling, not months of static storage. For a seasonal storage operation like the Cedar Rapids family garage, we set them up on a schedule tied to their actual usage pattern: full visual inspection with the lift unloaded before any vehicle goes up for winter storage, then another inspection at pickup time in spring before customers drive off. That’s two real inspections a year instead of one, timed to the moments when problems are easiest to catch and fix.

We also walked them through what triggers an immediate replacement rather than waiting for the next scheduled check: any visible fraying, any cable that’s noticeably thinner than its pair, or any carriage that won’t equalize within the manufacturer’s tolerance even after adjustment. Cables are a wear item, not a lifetime part, and on lifts running fifteen, twenty, even thirty years old, replacing all four cables as a set — rather than just the one that looks bad — keeps the load balanced evenly across both columns going forward.

The Multi-Generation Shop Problem: Records and Manuals

One thing that made this job harder than it needed to be: nobody in three generations had kept the original install paperwork. No serial number log, no cable replacement history, no record of who serviced the lift last or when. That’s common in family shops where equipment gets passed down along with the building, but it makes every service call start from scratch, hunting for a model plate that’s been painted over twice.

We always recommend keeping a simple folder — paper or digital — with the lift’s model number, serial number, install date, and a running log of cable and cylinder service. It doesn’t need to be fancy. When the grandson eventually hands this shop to his own kids, that folder is worth more than most of the tools in the bay, because it turns every future service call into a five-minute lookup instead of a guessing game with a faded nameplate.

Sourcing the Right Parts for Older Lifts

Older automotive two post lifts present a real sourcing challenge once the original manufacturer has changed hands or discontinued a model line. We work with Challenger and Rotary parts channels regularly and can usually cross-reference an older lift’s specs against a current parts catalog even when the exact model number no longer exists. For the Cedar Rapids family shop, that meant pulling column height, base footprint, and carriage travel measurements off the physical lift and matching those dimensions to a current cable kit rather than relying on a model number nobody could read anymore. It’s slower than a straight parts lookup, but it works, and it means a thirty-year-old lift doesn’t have to get scrapped just because the sticker faded. When to Call Instead of DIY-ing It

Cable inspection itself — a visual check for fraying, thinning, and rust — is something most shop owners can do themselves with the lift unloaded and locked. Replacement is where we tell people to call us. Equalizer cables carry real tension, and a cable that lets go while someone’s threading it through a sheave can do serious damage to a hand or an eye. There’s also the equalization adjustment afterward, which needs to be dialed in correctly or the two columns won’t rise and lower in sync.
