Why CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work Demands the Right Two Post Lift Geometry

CV axle and half-shaft replacement isn’t a job you do with the vehicle six inches off the ground. Techs need the wheels hanging free, full suspension droop, and enough room to swing a slide hammer or a puller without cracking knuckles on a crossmember. That means running automotive two post lifts to near full height on a regular basis, not just for a quick tire rotation. On a dealership drive doing this job a dozen times a week, the lift is going up and coming down all day, which is exactly why we push customers toward asymmetric arm designs that get doors open wide without the vehicle swinging into the columns.

We map that swing radius against the door track, the adjacent lift’s columns, and any support poles in the bay before we finalize a floor plan, because moving anchor bolts after the concrete’s drilled is a conversation nobody wants to have.

Concrete, Anchoring, and What We Check Before Install Day

Every two-post install starts with concrete. We need to know slab thickness, age, and psi rating before we send a crew, because undersized or cracked concrete won’t hold anchor bolts under repeated CV axle work where the lift cycles up and down all shift long. A dealership bay poured for foot traffic and light parking isn’t automatically rated for a 10,000 lb capacity two-post lift with a loaded truck on the arms. We ask for a slab report or, at minimum, a known pour date and thickness before we commit to an install date.

We also confirm site access before the truck rolls: is there a forklift on site, is there a loading dock or ground-level door wide enough for a crated lift, and is the bay clear of other equipment during install. Dealerships along the Iowa-Nebraska border often have tight service drives shared with body shop bays or detail areas, so we coordinate delivery timing around their existing shop schedule instead of just showing up. Capacity Ratings and Matching the Lift to Dealership Vehicle Mix

Capacity matters just as much as clearance. A dealership servicing half-ton and heavier trucks alongside sedans needs a two-post lift rated well above the heaviest vehicle it’ll see, not just the average. We generally steer commercial dealership accounts toward 10,000 to 12,000 lb rated automotive two post lifts when trucks and SUVs are part of the regular mix, reserving lighter capacity units for stores that stay almost entirely passenger car. Undersizing capacity to save money up front is one of the more expensive mistakes we see corrected later.

We also factor in duty cycle. A dealership running CV axle and half-shaft jobs back-to-back all day puts more wear on hydraulic components and cables than a shop doing occasional oil changes. That duty cycle should factor into which brand and model gets specified, and it factors into how often we recommend inspection and cable service down the road.
