We’ve walked into more than one Des Moines metro service manager’s bay where the lifts themselves were fine but the spacing around them turned a 90-minute gasket job into a two-hour ordeal because a tech couldn’t swing the arms far enough or get a drain pan under the vehicle without backing out a rolling toolbox first. Why Bay Layout Drives Gasket-Job Speed

Oil pan gasket work isn’t complicated mechanically, but it’s a job where the tech is under the vehicle repeatedly, sliding a drain pan, a torque wrench, and sometimes a transmission jack in and out. When automotive two post lifts are spaced too close to a wall, a parts rack, or another bay, that in-and-out motion gets choked. We’ve measured bays in the metro where the column-to-wall clearance was under three feet, which sounds workable until you add a rolling stool, a parts cart, and a second tech helping torque the pan back up.

Our rule of thumb for a dedicated gasket/fluid bay is a minimum of four feet of clear space behind each column and at least three feet on the drive-through side beyond where the arms fully extend. That gives a tech room to rotate a drain pan out from under the vehicle without clipping a post. Asymmetric Arm Reach and Pan Placement

That same offset changes where the drain pan sits relative to the columns. When we’re speccing automotive two post lifts for oil pan and gasket-heavy shops, we look at front arm reach in the 24 to 45 inch range and rear arm reach typically longer, since most of that adjustability is what lets a single lift handle everything from a compact sedan to a three-quarter ton service truck without repositioning. For a metro dealership running multiple techs through the same bay in a shift, drive-through flow isn’t a luxury, it’s throughput. We generally see overall width specs in the 100 to 130 inch range depending on capacity class, and the wider spread models give more room for door swing during the gasket job itself, which matters when a tech needs to duck in and out to check torque sequence.

We also account for how automotive two post lifts get positioned relative to the next bay’s columns. Two lifts placed too close together can create a pinch point where neither vehicle’s doors open fully at the same time, which slows down a two-tech gasket job where one person is up top with the technical manual and the other is under the pan. Getting that column-to-column spacing right at install avoids a re-layout headache later.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

We’ve had installs where a shop owner confirmed eighteen-foot ceilings before we ever got a quote out, and that’s exactly the right question to ask first. Overhead clearance affects not just whether the lift physically fits but whether a tech can raise a vehicle to full working height for pan access without the columns crowding overhead lighting, HVAC ductwork, or a mezzanine storage rack that got added after the building was built.

For gasket work specifically, techs usually want the vehicle up around chest to shoulder height, not full extension, so overhead clearance is less critical than column footprint for that particular job. But if that same bay doubles as a general repair bay, we still spec for full-height clearance because automotive two post lifts get used for far more than one job type over their service life, and a bay designed only around today’s task list gets expensive to fix later.

Power Side and Cable Routing in a Dealer Bay

One detail that trips up a lot of layout plans is which side the power unit sits on. We get this question constantly during install scheduling, and it matters because a power unit mounted on the wrong side can put the hydraulic hose run right through a tech’s normal walking path. In a dealer bay doing repetitive oil pan work, that hose becomes a trip hazard fast.

We walk every install through this before the lift goes in the ground, matching power side to the layout of the bay’s electrical drops and the direction techs naturally move during a gasket job. Cable routing on the sync cables matters too, since a poorly routed cable run can wear against a column edge over time and shorten the interval before you need a replacement cable. Getting this right at install, not after, saves a service call down the road.

Concrete, Anchoring, and Pit Considerations

Before we ever schedule an install crew, we’re asking about concrete thickness and age, whether there’s a pit already cut into the floor, and whether a forklift can get on site to unload the columns. A dealer bay that’s been retrofitted more than once sometimes has inconsistent slab thickness across the floor, and that changes anchor bolt depth and placement for automotive two post lifts rated for higher capacities.

We’ve also run into bays where an old inground lift was removed and the pit was only partially filled, leaving a soft spot exactly where a new column would need to sit. Catching that during a site visit, rather than on install day, keeps a dealership’s downtime to a single scheduled morning instead of a delayed job while a concrete crew gets called in. It’s a boring detail compared to arm reach and capacity ratings, but it’s the one that determines whether install day goes smoothly.

Matching Capacity to Vehicle Mix

A metro dealership’s actual vehicle mix should drive lift capacity more than a generic recommendation. If a service department is mostly handling passenger cars and light trucks for gasket and fluid work, a 9,000 to 10,000 lb lift covers it. Add heavier trucks, vans with towing packages, or fleet vehicles into the mix and we’re usually recommending 12,000 lb or higher rated automotive two post lifts to keep margin for loaded vehicles rather than running right at the rated limit every day.

We also talk through arm and adapter accessories at this stage, since stack adapters and truck pucks change how quickly a tech can get a lift positioned under a raised pickup versus a low sedan in the same bay during the same shift. A bay that sees a mixed fleet benefits from having the right accessory kit on hand rather than improvising with wood blocks, which we still see more often than we’d like on service floors around the metro.
