Automotive two post lifts are the backbone of almost every serious transmission bay we’ve helped build, and the order you do things in matters just as much as the lift you pick. We recently worked through a build-out for a third-generation family garage near the Illinois-Iowa line, a shop that’s been swapping transmissions and clutches since the grandfather ran it out of a pole barn. The grandson wanted to finally get organized instead of jacking trucks up on stands. When you’re sequencing a garage around a two-post lift, the equipment itself is actually the easy part — it’s the concrete, the ceiling, the power, and the drain lines that decide whether install day goes smoothly or turns into a three-week delay.

Why Sequencing Matters Before You Order Automotive Two Post Lifts

We see this mistake constantly: a shop owner gets excited, orders equipment, and only afterward starts asking about concrete thickness or ceiling clearance. With automotive two post lifts, the sequencing needs to run backward from the equipment specs. Before anything ships, we want to know slab thickness, whether there’s rebar or wire mesh, ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, and available electrical service. On the western Illinois job, the family had just finished pouring a new floor and framing the bay, which actually worked in our favor — we could tell them exactly where the anchors needed to land before the electricians started running conduit for lights.

That’s the right order: concrete and structure first, then lift placement marked on the floor, then electrical rough-in, then delivery. If you wire your shop lights and outlets before you know where the lift columns sit, you risk a light fixture hanging directly over a post or a 220V outlet on the wrong wall. We always tell customers to get us in for a site look, even a quick one, before the electrician shows up. It costs nothing and saves real rework.

Concrete Requirements for a Transmission Bay Two-Post

For a transmission service bay, we typically want a minimum of 4 inches of concrete without rebar or wire mesh interference at the anchor points, and we prefer to see 5.5 to 6 inches if the shop is also planning heavier diesel or dually work down the road. On this build, the slab was right around 5.5 to 6 inches, which is plenty for a mid-capacity two-post rated for transmission and driveline pulls. If your shop cut drains or plumbing runs through the pad already, that’s fine as long as the anchor pattern misses those lines — we map it out before drilling.

Rebar is the wildcard. A little rebar near the surface usually isn’t a dealbreaker, but a mat of rebar sitting right where an anchor needs to go means we either shift the lift a few inches or core through it, which slows the install. We always ask upfront: was there rebar in the pour, or just wire mesh? Most garage-scale pours for a two-post bay skip heavy rebar, but shops that poured for future four-post or alignment rack use sometimes over-built the slab, which is actually a gift for anchor strength.

Ceiling Height and Vehicle Clearance

Ceiling height gets overlooked until the lift is halfway up with a truck on it. For a shop lifting pickups and vans for transmission work, we want at least 12 feet of clear height from floor to the lowest obstruction — lights, joists, ductwork — and closer to 14 to 16 feet is comfortable if you ever plan to run a lifted diesel truck at full extension. One garage we quoted in the Gilman, Iowa area for diesel truck work had almost 16 feet of clearance with 6-inch concrete, which gave them room to run a taller two-post without worrying about clipping anything overhead.

For the western Illinois family shop, the building had roughly 13 feet to the trusses, enough for a standard-duty two-post to run a pickup to full height with room for the arms and safety locks to clear. We measure to the lowest hanging obstruction, not just the roof deck — that includes sprinkler heads, HVAC ductwork, and any overhead door track that might intrude into the swing radius of the lift arms.

Electrical Service: Single Phase, Voltage, and Amperage

Most standard automotive two post lifts run fine on a 110V circuit for the control box, but once you start talking about a two-post with a locking system or a double-cylinder design pulling more load, you’ll often need to step up to 220 or 240V single phase. We had a customer recently who had 110 wired into the garage already and assumed it would work — it turned out the double-cylinder unit he wanted needed the higher voltage, so we had him loop in an electrician before delivery instead of after.

For a transmission-focused bay, we typically spec a dedicated 220V, 20-amp circuit near the power unit location, run in conduit if the shop wants it clean and code-compliant. If the family garage eventually adds a second lift or an alignment rack, it’s worth having the electrician rough in a spare circuit at the same time rather than opening the wall twice. That’s a sequencing tip that saves real money over the life of the shop.

Choosing Capacity for Transmission and Driveline Work

Transmission service doesn’t always need the highest-capacity two-post on the market, but it does need good access underneath and stable lifting geometry for pulling driveshafts and dropping pans. For light trucks and cars, a 9,000 to 10,000 lb capacity two-post covers the vast majority of transmission jobs a family garage sees. If the shop also handles diesel pickups or dually trucks, stepping up to a 12,000 lb or heavier unit gives more margin and a wider stance for stability.

We ask customers directly what they’re lifting most — light cars and SUVs, or trucks and diesels — because that answer drives both capacity and arm configuration. A shop that mostly services transmissions on half-ton trucks and passenger cars doesn’t need the same rated capacity as one pulling heavy dually work. Sizing correctly the first time avoids buying twice, which we’ve seen happen when a shop under-bought and had to replace a two-post within a couple years.

Anchor Bolt Pattern and Floor Layout Planning

Every model of automotive two post lifts has its own footprint and anchor bolt pattern, so we lay out the actual columns on the floor with chalk before drilling anything. Spacing between the two posts needs to account for door swing on the vehicles you’re servicing, plus enough room on each side to walk around comfortably with tools and a transmission jack. In tight bays, we’ve had to shift a planned layout by a foot or more once we accounted for how far a truck door swings open next to the post.

We also plan for a drive path — you need enough clear runway in front of and behind the lift to pull straight in without a three-point turn every time. For garages converting an old space, like the western Illinois family’s building that used to be a general storage bay, this planning stage catches problems like support columns or old equipment mounts that interfere with where the lift naturally wants to sit.

Delivery Timing and Install-Day Coordination

Once concrete, ceiling, and power are sorted, delivery typically runs one and a half to two weeks out depending on the specific model and freight schedule. We coordinate install day so our crew can arrive right as the equipment lands, especially for shops that are close enough to our Iowa base that we can turn around installation the same day freight shows up. Having a forklift or at least a pallet jack on site speeds things along considerably, since the lift columns and power unit are heavy enough that manual staging slows the whole crew down.

We always confirm oil purchase ahead of time too — some shops assume hydraulic fluid comes with the lift, and it usually doesn’t unless specifically quoted that way. Getting that detail nailed down before install day, along with confirming someone will be on site to walk through the safety locks and cable adjustment with our tech, keeps the whole automotive two post lifts installation moving without a wasted trip.
