Automotive two post lifts come in two very different flavors once you get past the paint color and the weight rating sticker, and picking the wrong one can cost a shop headroom, floor space, or a wasted afternoon fighting a low ceiling. We had this conversation recently with a third-generation family garage near the Quad Cities that was adding a bay specifically for wheel bearing service, and the question wasn’t whether to buy a two post lift at all — it was whether to run overhead or baseplate. That’s a real engineering decision with real dimensions attached, not a coin flip, and it’s the same question we walk through with almost every Iowa shop expansion we quote.

The third-generation shop and the wheel bearing bay

This particular garage had been in the same family since the 1970s, and the grandson running the day-to-day work wanted a dedicated bay for wheel bearing service that wouldn’t tie up their general-repair lift all day. Wheel bearing jobs mean pulling wheels, sometimes dropping a hub assembly, and needing clean access to both sides of the vehicle without a swing arm or overhead beam getting in the way of a press or a slide hammer. That use case pushed the conversation straight into automotive two post lifts and which configuration actually suits that kind of work.

The building itself had a lower ceiling in the older section, roughly 12 feet to the bottom of the joists, which immediately became the deciding factor. We measured, we talked through vehicle mix — mostly half-ton trucks and full-size SUVs, some passenger cars — and we walked through what each configuration would actually do to their workflow before ordering anything. That’s the process every shop should go through, not just this one, because the ceiling height and the vehicle mix decide the answer more than personal preference does.

Overhead configuration: what it actually requires overhead

An overhead-style two post lift routes its safety mechanism and sometimes its hydraulic lines through a beam connecting the tops of both columns, above the vehicle. That beam adds rigidity and is common on higher-capacity commercial lifts, but it also demands real clearance. On a typical 9,000 to 10,000 lb overhead unit, you’re looking at needing 13 to 14 feet minimum from floor to the lowest ceiling obstruction to run a full-size truck up to top height without the roof or an antenna kissing the beam. That’s before accounting for garage door openers, HVAC ductwork, or shop lighting.

For shops with newer construction or dedicated commercial bays, overhead automotive two post lifts make sense — they’re often more affordable per pound of capacity and are the standard configuration on a lot of Rotary and Challenger commercial units we install across Iowa. But for that Quad Cities garage’s older bay, overhead was off the table the moment we measured the joists. We see this exact scenario constantly: a shop owner falls in love with a lift online, then finds out their building won’t physically accept it. Measure first, shop second.

Baseplate configuration: trading floor anchoring for headroom

A baseplate two post lift ties its columns together through a plate running across the floor instead of a beam overhead, which means the only clearance requirement is the height of the columns themselves plus the raised vehicle — typically 10 to 11 feet total on a similar-capacity unit. That extra 2 to 3 feet of headroom savings is exactly why the Quad Cities shop went baseplate for their new bay. The tradeoff is that the plate sits on the floor between the columns, which can be a minor trip hazard and occasionally interferes with long low-clearance vehicles, though for trucks and SUVs it’s rarely an issue.

Baseplate models also tend to install a bit faster since there’s less overhead rigging and no beam to hoist into place, which matters when a shop is trying to get a new bay online without losing a week of labor. For a wheel bearing bay specifically, baseplate gives techs unobstructed overhead access for hoists, engine cranes if needed, or simply standing up straight without ducking a beam every time they walk under the vehicle. That’s a real productivity difference on a bay that sees the same job repeated all day.

Capacity and asymmetric arm geometry for wheel bearing work

Most wheel bearing service doesn’t need heavy-duty capacity, but the arm geometry matters more than people expect. An asymmetric two post lift positions the front arms shorter and angled outward, and the rear arms longer, so the vehicle’s weight balances properly and the doors clear the columns when open — critical when a tech needs to get in and out repeatedly while chasing a bearing job. We’ve quoted asymmetric two post lifts in the 9,000 to 11,000 lb range for shops doing exactly this kind of work, and that capacity band covers nearly everything short of a one-ton dually.

The Quad Cities shop settled on an asymmetric baseplate configuration rated in that 9K-to-11K window, which gave them margin above their heaviest half-ton trucks without paying for capacity they’d never use on a dedicated wheel bearing bay. We talk through this same math with shops all over Iowa — matching arm geometry and capacity to the actual job mix instead of just buying the biggest number on the spec sheet. Automotive two post lifts are not one-size-fits-all, and the arm swing radius alone can determine whether a bay actually works for the vehicles rolling through it.

Concrete, anchoring, and what our install crew checks first

Before either configuration goes in, we check the slab. Baseplate lifts distribute anchor load across a wider footprint, which is more forgiving on older or thinner concrete, while overhead lifts concentrate more force at each column base and typically want a thicker, well-cured pour — generally 4 inches minimum, though we prefer more for higher-capacity commercial units. The older section of that Quad Cities building had original concrete from decades back, which was another mark in baseplate’s favor once we core-tested it.

We also ask the standard installation questions every time: is there a forklift on site for unloading, is the bay clear of obstructions, and does the crew have clean access to the anchor points without cutting into existing utility runs. These logistics questions matter as much as the lift’s engineering specs, because a perfect lift choice still fails if delivery and anchoring go sideways. Getting this right up front saves a shop from a callback later.

Freight, lead time, and scheduling the install

Once a shop decides between overhead and baseplate, the next real-world question is always logistics — freight lead time, whether there’s a loading dock or forklift on site, and whether the bay is actually clear and ready on install day. Two post lifts ship on pallets or crates depending on the manufacturer, and larger overhead beam sections sometimes ship separately, which can add a few days to full assembly if a shop isn’t prepared for staggered delivery. We coordinate this ahead of time so a crew isn’t standing around a half-unpacked lift.

For the Quad Cities garage, we scheduled the baseplate unit to arrive with enough lead time to confirm concrete cure and clear the bay of an old parts shelf that was in the way. There’s no universally correct answer between overhead and baseplate automotive two post lifts — it depends on ceiling height, concrete condition, vehicle mix, and how the bay will actually be used day to day. Shops with tall commercial bays and heavy-duty capacity needs often lean overhead for the rigidity and typically lower cost per pound of capacity. Shops working in older buildings, converted spaces, or dedicated service bays like this wheel bearing setup usually do better with baseplate for the headroom and faster install.

What matters most is measuring before ordering and being honest about the vehicle mix the bay will actually see.
