Every quote we write starts with three measurements: ceiling height, bay width, and concrete thickness. We had a family shop north of Ames call in wanting a 2-post lift for a 2008 3/4-ton diesel truck, and the first thing we asked was ceiling height and slab depth. Anything under 4 inches of unreinforced slab is a red flag for us before we even talk lift model, and 5-inch slabs poured to spec are the minimum we want to see for a 10K two-post. We measure bay width too — most asymmetric two post lifts need 12 to 14 feet of clear bay width once you account for column spacing and door swing on both sides. Get any one of these three numbers wrong and you either can’t install the lift you bought, or you install it and can’t actually raise the vehicle you bought it for.

Seasonal Vehicle Storage: Why the Lift You Choose Matters

The flip side is damage from bad lift habits actually hurts resale. Arms set on rocker panels instead of frame rails, a car dropped too fast onto worn locks, or fluid leaking from tired cylinders onto a car’s underside are all things we’ve seen knock value off a vehicle a family was trying to sell or trade. If you’re storing a car specifically to preserve its value — a low-mile truck, a project car, a seasonal toy — the lift itself needs to be in good working order, not just present in the garage. That’s the whole point of automotive two post lifts done right.

Two Post vs. Four Post for Long-Term Storage

We get asked constantly whether a four post drive-on is better than a two post for storage, and the honest answer depends on your bay. Two post lifts free up floor space and let you work underneath easily, which matters if you’re also doing brake jobs or oil changes on the stored vehicle between seasons. Four post lifts are simpler to drive onto without spotting arms, which some family shop owners prefer for a vehicle that just needs to sit. For pure seasonal storage with occasional service work mixed in, most of our Ames customers still land on a two post setup — models like a Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger CL10 give you the working access a four-post can’t match.

Installation Logistics: Freight, Forklifts, and Lead Time

Lead time on the equipment itself varies by manufacturer and model, and we’d rather tell a customer honestly that a power unit is backordered than promise an install date we can’t hit.

Repair, Rebuild, or Replace: Reading an Older Lift

A lot of the calls that come into our shop aren’t about new automotive two post lifts at all — they’re about an older unit that’s buzzing, leaking, or dropping unevenly. We had a call about a lift that sat all winter with a truck on the locks, and come spring all it did was buzz when the customer tried to raise it, even after replacing the capacitor. That’s usually a motor or a stuck hydraulic issue, not something you fix by guessing at parts. Uneven lowering on an older 10K two-post is almost always a cylinder or cable problem, and it’s worth a proper diagnosis before spending money on parts that might not be the actual fix.

Cylinder leaks at both ends of a post, with no chrome rod exposed, usually mean the unit is low on fluid and likely needs reseal or replacement cylinders — we see this often enough on older American-made two post lifts that we build it into our standard diagnostic checklist. Deciding between rebuild and replace comes down to age, parts availability, and how much the unit is worth to your operation. For a family shop running the same lift for fifteen or twenty years, a reseal is often cheaper and faster than sourcing a whole new column.

Choosing the Right Model for Your Bay

By the time we get to a final recommendation, we’ve usually walked through ceiling height, slab thickness, bay width, and how the vehicle will actually be used — daily driver, seasonal storage, or heavy truck work.
