The grandfather poured the original slab in the 1970s for oil changes and tune-ups. The son added a lean-to bay in the 90s. Why Slab Thickness Matters More Than the Lift’s Capacity Rating

Most manufacturers of automotive two post lifts specify a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete for anchoring, but that number assumes a straightforward install with no cracks, no control joints nearby, and no old patch work. On the Waukee project, the original 1970s pour measured closer to 4 to 5 inches in the main bay, which sounds fine on paper. The problem was age and curing — concrete that old can still hold anchors well if it wasn’t compromised by oil saturation or freeze-thaw cracking, but we always core test before we commit to a spot.

We see this same conversation come up on calls constantly. A caller running a welding shop with 14-foot ceilings and a wide-open building told us his slab was 4 to 5 inches thick and wanted a 10,000 lb lift to handle one-ton trucks. That thickness can work for a 10,000 lb two post lift, but it’s the floor, not the target. If you’re planning ahead of a pour, or repouring a section specifically for lift storage, we recommend 4.5 to 6 inches minimum, with rebar or mesh reinforcement, especially if the slab will also carry seasonal loads like a plow truck or a trailer parked nearby.

Rebar isn’t strictly required by every lift manufacturer, but for a family garage using automotive two post lifts to store vehicles seasonally — meaning the lift sits loaded for weeks or months at a time rather than cycling several times a day — we push harder for reinforced slab design. A grid of #3 or #4 rebar on 12 to 18 inch centers, tied and set with proper cover, spreads point loads across a wider footprint and resists the cracking that shows up years later around anchor bolts.

This matters even more in Iowa because of our freeze-thaw cycles. A slab poured without reinforcement can develop hairline cracks that widen every winter, and those cracks migrate toward anchor holes faster than people expect. On the Waukee job, the newer lean-to bay from the 1990s pour had wire mesh but no rebar grid, and it was holding up fine after decades — but we still recommended anchor placement away from the mesh seams. If you’re pouring fresh concrete specifically to install a two post lift for storage use, tell your concrete contractor the lift model and its wheelbase before the forms go up, not after.

Choosing Capacity for Storage Versus Daily Service Work

A lift used mainly for seasonal storage doesn’t need the same capacity as one used for daily service work, but we still recommend sizing up. A family storing a half-ton truck and a small collector car might get by with a 9,000 lb lift, but if there’s any chance a heavier truck, a plow rig, or a trailer-loaded vehicle gets parked on it, a 10,000 to 12,000 lb rated automotive two post lift gives you margin without a major price jump.

We’ve quoted plenty of two post lifts in the 12,000 lb range for shops that thought they only needed 7,000 lb, simply because their fleet changed over a few years. One dealership group we worked with needed a 12,000 lb two post moved and a second 12,000 lb unit installed in the same building — swapping out smaller lifts as their service needs grew. Buy for where your storage or service needs are headed, not just where they are today.

Anchoring Specifics: Bolt Depth, Edge Distance, and Spacing

Anchor bolts for automotive two post lifts typically need a minimum embedment depth around 4 to 5.5 inches depending on the manufacturer, and edge distance from any slab joint, crack, or the edge of the pour itself usually needs to be at least 6 to 8 inches per anchor. This is where older Waukee-area slabs get tricky — a 1970s pour might have control joints spaced in ways that weren’t designed with a modern lift footprint in mind.

We physically measure the column base plate pattern against the existing joints before drilling. If the ideal footprint straddles a joint or sits too close to an edge, we either relocate the lift within the bay or recommend a localized slab repair first. Skipping this step is how lifts end up with cracked anchor holes within a year or two, and it’s avoidable with fifteen minutes of measuring before the hammer drill comes out.

Ceiling Height and Clearance for Storage-Height Vehicles

Seasonal storage often means lifting a vehicle higher and leaving it there longer than a typical service lift cycle, so ceiling height planning matters more than people assume. A caller with 14-foot ceilings in an open shop had plenty of room, but a family garage bay built in stages, like the Waukee property, sometimes has lower clearance in the older section than the newer addition.

We measure from finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — not just the roofline, but ductwork, lighting, and door tracks — before recommending where a two post lift goes. If you want a vehicle parked at full lift height all winter for storage, you need real clearance above the vehicle’s highest point, not just above the lift arms. This is a common miss on family-owned properties that have been added onto over decades.

Installation Logistics: Access, Freight, and Existing Equipment

Every install we schedule starts with the same logistics questions: is there a forklift on site, is there a loading dock or just a driveway, and what’s already bolted to the floor that needs to move first. On multi-generation properties like the Waukee garage, we often find older equipment — an alignment lift, an outdated hoist — that needs relocating or removing before a new automotive two post lift can go in.

We’ve handled jobs that involved moving one lift while installing another in the same building, and jobs where an old hoist had to come out entirely to make room. Freight delivery on a new two post lift usually requires a way to get the crate off the truck, so if you don’t have a forklift, tell us up front and we’ll plan around it. In plenty of cases, an existing slab that’s been supporting a family garage for decades is perfectly capable of holding a properly anchored two post lift, provided it’s tested and the anchor pattern respects existing joints and cracks. We’d rather tell a customer their current slab works fine than sell an unnecessary repour.

For the Waukee family, that meant using the original 1970s bay for the lift after a core test confirmed adequate thickness and condition, while flagging the newer lean-to section as a lower priority for heavy storage use until a future slab upgrade. Every property has its own history, and matching the lift to the concrete that’s actually there — not the concrete you wish you had — is how these installs last for another generation.
