Automotive two post lifts are usually the first big equipment decision a family shop makes, and getting the sequencing right matters more than most people realize before they pour concrete or wire a panel. We’ve walked into more than one southern Minnesota garage where the owner’s grandfather started the business turning wrenches in a dirt-floor shed, the dad expanded into a proper building, and now the third generation is trying to figure out where a two post lift actually fits without tearing out work they already paid for. Why Sequencing Comes Before the Lift Order

Before anyone picks a model number, we walk the bay and ask what the building is actually going to do for the next fifteen years, not just this season. A third-generation shop we’ve worked with in a similar layout had already epoxied the floor and poured reinforced footings before calling us, and that’s backwards — footings need to match the lift’s base pad spacing and the column anchor pattern, not a generic guess. If you pour first and quote second, you risk anchor bolts landing on rebar or footings that don’t line up with a 10,000 lb or 12,000 lb two post’s actual column centers.

The right order is: decide the vehicle mix, confirm ceiling height, get the lift quoted, then pour concrete to that lift’s exact spec sheet. We’ve seen shops try to retrofit a two post into a bay poured for a four post, and it almost always means core-drilling new anchor holes or living with a lift that’s offset from where the aisle actually needs it. Sequencing the build-out around automotive two post lifts from day one saves a full round of concrete work later.

Ceiling Height and Column Clearance for Wheel Bearing Work

Wheel bearing service means pulling wheels off, sometimes dropping a hub assembly, and having enough overhead clearance to run an impact gun without banging the housing on a joist. For a two post lift rated 9,000 to 12,000 lbs, we generally want at least 12 feet of clear ceiling height to run the vehicle up to full arm reach without the top of the vehicle or a raised door threatening the rafters. Column placement also affects how a tech works a wheel bearing job. You want enough width between the columns that a full-size pickup’s mirrors and doors clear on the way in, plus enough side clearance from the columns to swing a floor jack under the control arm if the lift arms need repositioning mid-job. We typically spec four to five feet of clear space beyond the outer edge of the columns on each side for a working bay, more if the shop plans to run a one-ton dually regularly.

Concrete Thickness and Anchor Requirements

This is where a lot of garages get burned. A two post lift rated for 9,000 to 12,000 lbs generally needs a minimum of four inches of properly cured concrete, and we push for closer to five inches whenever a shop plans to run heavier one-ton trucks regularly. Thin or old, cracked slab concrete simply won’t hold anchor bolts under load, and a lift that shifts even slightly during a wheel bearing job is a liability nobody wants.

We always ask about the age and thickness of existing concrete before finalizing a quote, because retrofitting anchors into 30-year-old slab in an older family garage is a different job than pouring new pad concrete in a fresh build. If the existing slab won’t pass, we’ll section out and re-pour just the footprint needed rather than force a shop into a full floor replacement. Getting this step right up front avoids a mid-installation surprise that delays the whole build-out schedule.

Choosing Between 9,000, 10,000, and 12,000 lb Ratings

Family shops doing wheel bearing service on everyday cars, half-ton trucks, and the occasional one-ton dually should think honestly about the heaviest vehicle they’ll actually lift, not the rare exception. A 9,000 lb rated two post handles most passenger cars and light trucks comfortably, while a 10,000 to 12,000 lb rated unit gives headroom for heavier one-ton diesel work without maxing out the lift’s capacity on a routine basis.

We’ve quoted shops planning exactly this split — one lift sized for daily car and light truck work, a second heavier-rated unit reserved for the occasional dually or diesel job. If your garage sees a mix of vehicle weights, running two differently rated two post lifts side by side is often more practical than buying one oversized unit for every job. It also spreads bay availability so wheel bearing work on a sedan doesn’t tie up the one lift rated for heavy trucks.

Power Requirements and Electrical Planning

Most automotive two post lifts run on 220V single-phase power, and this needs to be planned into the build-out early, not added as an afterthought once the lift arrives. We’ve seen garages with power already roughed in for a future bay, which makes install day faster, versus shops where we’re coordinating with an electrician on-site to run new circuits before the lift can even be tested.

If your build-out plan includes adding a second or third lift down the road, it’s worth running conduit and stubbing extra circuits during the initial electrical work rather than opening walls again later. This is especially true in older family-owned buildings where the panel itself may need a subpanel upgrade to handle multiple 220V lift circuits plus compressor and welding loads. Planning this during the sequencing phase, not after the concrete is poured, keeps the whole project moving on schedule.

Delivery, Site Access, and Install Day Logistics

Before we schedule installation, we ask the same questions every time: is there a forklift on site, is there a loading dock or dock-height door, and what’s the clear path from the delivery point to the actual bay. A two post lift arrives as a genuinely heavy set of columns, carriages, and hydraulic components, and shops without dock access need to plan for a liftgate truck or arrange equipment on-site ahead of time.

We also confirm bay clearance for maneuvering the columns into position, especially in older buildings with narrower doorways or support posts mid-bay. A family garage that’s been added onto over three generations sometimes has awkward pinch points that weren’t a problem for smaller equipment but matter a lot when moving an 800-plus pound column assembly. Sorting this out during the planning call, not on install day, keeps the schedule tight and avoids delay fees.

Planning for Future Bays and a Second Lift

Third-generation shops almost always ask us the same question: should we build out for one lift now or plan the whole shop for two or three. Our answer is usually to design the concrete, electrical, and clearances for the full build-out even if the second lift purchase is a year or two away. It’s far cheaper to over-build concrete and conduit now than to reopen a working bay later.
