For a fleet shop doing ten-plus lifts a week on trucks and vans for suspension work, that headroom is what keeps your service bills flat instead of climbing every year past the warranty window.

Year Sixteen Through Twenty: Rebuild, Replace, or Ride It Out

By year sixteen, most shops are deciding whether to rebuild or replace. We’ve inspected plenty of two-post lifts from this era — Rotary and Challenger units mostly — where the frame and columns are structurally fine but the hydraulic cylinders, cables, and locking mechanisms need a full refresh. A cylinder rebuild or reseal, new cables, and a lock inspection can often buy another five to eight years of service on a lift that’s otherwise sound, and it’s almost always cheaper than a full replacement.

The heavier-duty configuration usually wins here too, simply because its frame and arms were built with more margin to begin with. We’ve done full inspections on 15-lift fleets where the older units still had usable structure after fifteen-plus years, needing only cable and hydraulic work to get back to full spec. That’s the payoff of choosing the right capacity rating from day one — you’re rebuilding a lift that’s worth rebuilding, not replacing a lift that never had the bones for it.

Service Contracts Change the Whole Equation

We’ve talked with fleet operators who are hesitant about monthly service plans, preferring to call us for one-off repairs as they come up. That’s a reasonable approach for a shop with one or two lifts. But once you’re running a dozen or more automotive two post lifts across multiple locations, the math flips.
