Myth: Hydraulic Pressure Alone Holds the Platform

The single biggest myth we hear on any bendpak 4-post car lift is that hydraulic hold is good enough to work underneath. It isn’t, and it was never designed to be. Hydraulic cylinders can drift, seals can weep, and a hose fitting loosening even slightly can drop a platform faster than anyone can react. That’s exactly why every one of these lifts ships with mechanical safety catches, sometimes called safety locks, spaced along the columns. Every tech in the bay needs to know that dropping onto the mechanical lock is not optional, it is the entire point of a four-post lift’s safety system, and it takes about five extra seconds.

Arm Restraints Are Not the Same Thing as Ramp Locks

People sometimes confuse the ramp locks that hold the runways in place with actual arm restraints used on lifts equipped with sliding jacks or adapters. On a bendpak 4-post car lift set up for axle work, many shops add a rolling jack or a sliding bridge jack under the frame to get wheels off the runways entirely, and that attachment has its own restraint pin or latch separate from the main column locks.
