His garage wasn’t a shop — it was storage for a car he only drove a handful of months a year, plus a daily driver he wanted off the concrete during the winter. A 2-post would have worked for service, but he wasn’t chasing lift points every time; he wanted to drive on, raise it, and walk away for weeks or months. What We Told Him to Check Between Service Visits

We gave him a short list he could run through himself without any tools: look at the cables for fraying, kinks, or flat spots anywhere along their length; check that all four corners of the platform sit level when raised, since a lean is often the first visible sign of uneven cable stretch; and listen for any new noise during a raise or lower cycle, since a cable riding wrong on a pulley will usually make itself known audibly before it fails visibly.

We also told him not to store a vehicle raised indefinitely without cycling the lift periodically. Letting a 4-post car lift sit loaded in one position for many months straight is harder on the cables and the locks than regular use, because there’s no movement to redistribute wear or reveal a developing problem early. A simple habit — raise, lower, raise again every month or two even during the off-season — does more for lift longevity than almost anything else an owner can do on their own.

Replacement Intervals: What’s Normal and What’s Not

There’s no single mileage-style number for cable replacement on a 4-post car lift, because it depends on cycle count, load, and storage conditions, not a calendar. What we do tell customers is that cables are a wear item, not a lifetime part, and most 4-post owners in Iowa should expect to replace them at some point over the life of the lift — often once every several years under normal use, sooner under heavy daily use, later under light storage use like his. The manufacturer’s spec sheet gives a baseline, but a visual and physical inspection at each service visit is what actually tells you whether it’s time.

When we did his one-year checkup, his cables were still within spec — no fraying, no stretch outside tolerance, no unevenness at the platform corners. Cable Replacement Itself: What the Job Actually Looks Like

The platform has to be safely supported independent of the cable being worked on, the new cable has to be routed and tensioned correctly across all four columns, and the synchronization between corners has to be verified before the lift goes back into regular use.
