Myth #1: The Safety-Cams Are Just for Storage, Not Alignment Work

The most common myth we hear is that the safety-cam locks on the Bendpak 4-post lift HD-9 only matter when you’re parking a vehicle for long-term storage, and that they can be skipped or half-engaged during a quick alignment check. That’s backwards. Alignment work is exactly when you need the cams fully seated, because you’re loading the runways with steering input, jacking on cross-brace jack beams, and sometimes running the vehicle’s own weight transfer side to side while adjusting camber and toe. Any lateral load on a platform that isn’t cam-locked can walk the carriage on the column, even briefly, and that’s enough to throw your alignment reading off before you even start.

We’ve been out to shops in the corridor where a tech assumed the cam engaged automatically just because the lift stopped rising. It doesn’t. You have to lower onto the lock, confirm the cam has actually caught a rung, and only then start your alignment sequence. Myth #2: Arm Restraints Are Optional If You’re Not Using a Rolling Jack

Some shops treat the arm restraints as extra hardware for rolling jack setups only, skipping them entirely when doing alignment work with the factory turnplates and slip plates. That’s a mistake specific to how the HD-9 is built. The arm restraints keep the lift’s structure square under the kind of side-load steering wheel input alignment techs generate constantly, turning the wheel lock to lock while checking toe or bump steer. Without the restraints properly set, that side load transfers into the frame in a way the engineers didn’t intend for sustained alignment cycles.

We’ve seen restraint pins left loose or removed altogether because a previous owner thought they were only there for shipping. On a used or transferred unit, that’s one of the first things we check during a service call in the corridor. It takes five minutes to verify and it’s the kind of thing that never shows up as a problem until the one day it does, usually with an expensive car on the rack and a customer standing in the waiting room.

Why European-Marque Shops Push This Rack Harder Than Domestic Shops

Alignment work on German and other European platforms tends to be more finicky than the domestic trucks and SUVs that make up most general repair volume, and that changes how a shop uses the Bendpak 4-post lift HD-9 day to day. It’s a training gap, and it’s the number one reason we get called for a service visit that turns out to be a simple re-education on arm restraints and cam engagement rather than an actual mechanical fault.
